A Salute to the Office for the Aging
Office provides support to myriad groups of caregivers

BATH - Caregiver Resource Center, operated by the Steuben County Office for the Aging, is located at 3 East Pulteney Square. Established in 1990, CRC offers information and assistance, as well as emotional and educational support for those who are caregivers on a full time, part time, long-term or short-term basis. Caregiver groups are in involved in a wide range of age- and healthrel; ated issues.

Alzheimer's Disease Support

A variety of support groups are offered throughout Steuben County addressing the needs of caregivers, friends and families of Alzheimer's victims, and adult children who are caring for their aging parents. The resources of the Rochester Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association are available through these support groups.

Community Seminars

Workshops on caregiver issues are presented throughout the year in Bath, Corning, Hornell and Wayland.

Counseling

Individual counseling, as well as family meetings, are available to assist with the many challenges of caregiving and supporting those who are aging.

Library holdings

Located within the CRC in the Bath office, this caregiver library offers books, videotapes, and reference materials available to the public on loan basis. Call the CRC for an up-to-date list of holdings.

Respite

Temporary relief for the caregiver is available on a limited basis through contracts with community agencies providing inhome services and adult day services.

At Risk Older Driver Program

Assistance is available to individuals who have concerns about the at-risk older driver. Counseling information and referrals can make addressing this, many-times difficult issue, easier for older drivers and concerned citizens.

Grandparents Raising

Grandchildren Program

The Caregiver Resource Center offers support, learning seminars, and intergenerational programs for grandparents (and relatives raising relatives). A resource guide is available to assist relative caregivers with financial, legal and medical issues. Contact the CRC to receive your copy at no cost.

BENEFITS COUNSELING

Having trouble paying medical bills? Confused about medical coverage? What is SSI and how do I apply for it? Need help with food bills? Will I lose my house if I apply for Medicaid? Call us for expert answers and caring advice.

EMPLOYMENT

A number of programs in Steuben County offer part-time work to persons age 55 and older who meet certain income criteria. For information on Green Thumb and the Senior Aide Program, call the Office for the Aging.

ENERGY

Staff from OFA is available to screen and refer eligible older persons whose homes are in need of winterizing and other energy conservation services. In addition staff will assist in identifying other resources to meet a client's needs including utility fuel funds, charitable organizations, state and federal loan and grant programs, etc.

IN-HOME SERVICES

The Office for the Aging offers a non-medical service that assists people who are not able to meet their needs independently. It is designed to serve a population of seniors who are not eligible for Medicaid, but do not have sufficient resources to pay for private care. Services available can include help with eating, bathing, housework, laundry, shopping, errands and reminders to take medication.
