Planning for your new deck
By David Haut Specialty Publications
Ahh, the change of the seasons is so enjoyable. The weather turns warm, the spring rains are fresh; every moment seems perfect to be outside.
So, why not spend those moments on a new deck.
A new deck is not beyond the means of the average person, said Rick Schwab, department manager at a home improvement store.
There are just a few steps to follow before getting started.
"It's good to get a perspective," Schwab said.
He said several customers are surprised when introduced to the multitude of deck options, not to mention the cost.
"Look at the minimum first," Schwab said. "You can always add things later."
Schwab said he commonly has customers who plan to build a large deck with several options, but are forced to scale back after they are quoted a cost.
For builders on a budget, starting with a smaller deck with fewer options makes
building a deck more
probable and the job much easier.
Schwab recommends taking a photo, making a copy and drawing
in the desired deck, just as a reference. Another idea is to rope off the area of the desired deck.
This will allow you flexibility in your initial design. You will have a better idea of what it will look like, and it's simple to make adjustments.
After you have an idea of how large or small of area you desire, the next step is checking into what materials are available.
For decks, Schwab recommends cedar, due to its price, durability and versatility. Keep in mind a wood deck will require some maintenance. If you're looking for a deck with lower maintenance, synthetic
deck material is becoming more and more popular. These materials tend to cost more, but for the busy homeowner, these materials may be worth looking into. Just remember, some synthetic decks may reflect the bright sun and its heat, making it uncomfortable during the mid-day hours. Check your area for the newest innovations.
Many home improvement stores have software capable of designing your deck within minutes. All the options the store has to offer are available in the process, and you can see the result on the screen. An approximate material cost is made available through the process as well.
The cost of a new deck varies greatly depending on size and design. A larger, more elaborate deck will obviously cost more, which is why Schwab recommends deciding on the smallest size first, then adding later to avoid surprises or disappointments.
While some decks are added merely for convenience and luxury, any home deck can be built to fit a pool, hot tub or even a backyard smoker. Cosmetically, there are literally limitless designs available.
"Consult your local lumberyard or how-to center," Schwab said. "We serve as consultants. We're here to help you."
