Helen Chissom

AVOCA - Helen Chissom, 67, passed away Monday morning, July 16, at her home at 23 S. Maple St., after a long illness.

Born in Bath on Aug. 5, 1939 she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Neotia Earley Saltsman.

A life long resident of Avoca, Helen attended Avoca Central School.

She owned and operated a beauty shop at her home and was also employed at the Steuben County Health Care Facility and the Taylor Health Center in Bath.

Helen was a member of the Avoca United Methodist Church and enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren and the neighborhood children.

Her family includes her two sons, Douglas Chissom and Tim (Teri) Chisson all of Avoca; her 10 grandchildren; her brother, Steve (Geraldine) Chissom of Avoca; her three sisters, Mildred (John) McAllister of Arkansas, Alice (Ron) Smith of Cape Town, South Africa and Ruth Ostrander of Bath; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by her two sisters, Martha and Mary Etta Saltsman and her two brothers, Harry and Irv Saltsman.

Calling hours were from 4-6 p.m. Friday, July 20, at the Avoca United Methodist Church where a funeral service was held in her memory following calling hours at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Sande Thomas officiating.

Private interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Avoca at the convenience of her family.

Arrangements are with the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca.
