Bath, Horseheads win big
BY COLLIN WRIGHT THE LEADER

CORNING - Bath scored the first seven runs of the game and tacked on some insurance runs late to defeat Corning Blue 11-1 at the 12-and-under Cinderella World Series.

After going down quietly in the first, Bath busted out its walking sticks in the bottom of the second inning. Haylee Cody led off the inning with a walk, then advanced to third when she stole second and the throw from the catcher crashed off her helmet into right field. Cody was driven home by Lindsey Rider's ground ball to shortstop, as she beat the tag at the plate to give Bath a 1-0 lead.

Bath then drew three consecutive walks, the last of which forced in Rider. After a conference on the mound by Corning and a strike out, Toni Townsend walked to drive in Morgan Loghry. After Corning's Brooke Leonard fanned her second batter of the frame, Brina Maloney drew the fifth walk of the inning, forcing in Sam Cupp.

Courtney Coots then blasted a 3-2 pitch into the outfield, which would have been a bases clearing double if not for the five-run rule. Marissa Volz scored on the play to make it 5-0.

Bath scored two more runs in the third, when Cody and Loghry each drew their second walk of the game. Cody scored on a groundout by Cupp, while Loghry crossed the plate on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 7-0.

Coots made the lead stand, striking out five while going the distance for the win. She allowed only one hit in the game, a double by Brooke Becker in the top of the fifth. Becker's drive to right glanced off the glove of the charging outfielder and scooted away, allowing Kirsta Rhodes to score Corning's lone run.

In other pool play action, Horseheads Blue's Emily Doyle tossed a no-hitter to lead her team past Corning Red 14-0 in five innings.

Offensively Horseheads Blue was led by Renee Condie, who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Teammate Cat Cites was 2-for-3 in the contest while driving in a pair of runs and also scoring twice.
