HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS • July 28 and 29, the Classic Motorcycle Rally - celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Curtiss's l36.4 mph record-setting run at Ormond Beach Florida, on January 24, 1907 - held at the local museum those two days from 9:00am-5:00pm. Also, taking place is the Vintage Motorcycle Exhibit, tours of the Museum, food vendors on the Museum grounds, Motorcycle Vendors (on Saturday only), Motorcycle Tour Route maps and times for cycle rides on the great back roads of the scenic Finger Lakes. Special admission for visitors arriving on a motorcycle-$4.00 per. • A lot going on at the new Fred & Harriett Taylor Memorial Library on William Street! Was there with Daughter #1 recently and I was delighted with it, structurally and how it is laid out. Congratulations to all who worked so hard to get it! Here are a few events coming up soon: FREE SUMMER MOVIES and two family movies are on the docket; one was shown and the other one will be shown August 25. Craft nights are every Tuesdays at 4:00pm. Summer Story Time is Mondays at 10:30 am. There is a Kids Summer Program entitled, "Get a Clue at Your Library" which began July 9,and is fun program. The young and the old are invited to take part in it which runs through August 25. There are even PRIZES being given as the reading goes on! • Remember the great Summer Concert Series each Thursday night in the bandstand on the Village Square! This week musicians appearing between 6:00-8:00pm are the Pioneros Del Ritma's. Music this year is presented by Hammondsport Five Star Bank, for which the community and music lovers are truly thankful! • Neighbor Prattsburgh is offering a Summer Festival Town Wide Yard Sale, August 3, 4, and 5. Besides the yard sales, there will be vendors in the Park and other activities such as on opening day, the Fireman's Waterball competition at 6:30pm. On Saturday, 10:00am-noon: Horse Drawn Wagon Rides; 11:00am: Watermelon Eating Contest; Noon: Pet Show; Also the Fireman's Chicken BBQ starts at noon! l:00pm Bike Races; 2:00pm Tug o' War. Sunday has music and entertainment all day. At 8:30am Sunday, there is a church service in the park followed by Breakfast at the Presbyterian Church. At l:00pm there will be a large parade. Come and enjoy! • Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce has sponsored this summer's "The Palettes of Keuka" featuring the work of Keuka Lake artists, with art work placed on big, outdoor palettes on display for the months of July and August. They make so many outdoor places in the village and around Dame Keuka fun and create a Treasure Huntfeel to the summer activity of traveling around this Finger Lake promoting regional arts while simultaneously raising funds for the benefit of the local art industry. At the same time, it is giving both 'Port natives and local tourists another fun way to spend the summer months! • July 28, saw The 105 Annual Hammondsport Alumni Association meeting at the Hammondsport Fire Department for social hour, dinner and the awarding of $46,000 Alumni Scholarships this year! Award winners will be announced ASAP. The Alumni has been promoting the Gus Tillman Anniversary Club for several years. Members have been asked to donate at least $l.00 per each year since their graduation. Anyone not attending the reunion may mail a check (donating AT LEAST $1 per year since graduation.) It helps with the scholarships of which we are very proud , and other things which are needed. • "Over the Top" is July 29th Tunes in the Tent up at the Heron Hill Winery. Admission is free-the the music is fine! At the Blue Heron Cafe - new for 2007- there are daily specials, full-service dining on their terrace rain or shine.There is also live music on the terrace every Saturday through October: l2:30-4:30pm. Church news: • St. Gabriel's Catholic Church: July 29 the churches own Laura Opelt (Director of Steuben County Catholic's Charities) speaks at all masses on the work this group does in Steuben to strengthen families, reduce poverty, and build community. This parish has been very generous in its response to Laura's appeal in past years and it is hoped parishioners are again able to be generous with both your financial and prayerful support. So many people came July 28 to Kolo's annual party at their home in Pleasant Valley and had such good food and fun, we thank them so much for their hosting it! Steuben County Youth Board/Bureau and WVIN/WABH "Tyrtle Beach Youth Fund" have notified our Youth Group that they have been allocated a grant of $500 from this year's "Tyrtle Beach" fund drive. July 29, Bob Illi of the Pulteney area will be leading worship and preaching at both services. His sermon will be "A Spiritual Experience-the Appalachian Trail." At Pulteney each Thursday at l0:00am Prayer and Bible Study focusing on Wayne Muller's book, "Sabbath." Especially for Hammondsport: Each Saturday from 9:00am-3:00pm is a Farmer's Market and Bake sale in front of the church. Anyone who can work a few hours let Georgina or Bryan know!
