Legion Auxiliary The American Legion Auxiliary of Unit 173 meets every second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles Wescott Post on William St., Bath. Problems in communication? The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Life on the Ground Dr. Randy Weidner, Nature Center Committee Member, will present Life on the Ground: A Litter Search at 10:30 a.m. August 18 at the Mossy Bank Nature Center, Bath. Bath VA Walking Tours To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007. Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is not cost to participate. Steuben County Historical Society The Steuben County Historical Society announces the following summer hours. The Magee House, located at the Dormann-Davenport Learning Complex, West Morris St. in Bath, will be open each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during July and August. Personnel will be on hand to staff the site and offer guided tours to visitors. Seeking new farmers The Cornell University Cooperative Extension is looking for new farmers who wish to be included in the 2007 edition of the Steuben County Guide to Agricultural Products. The Guide presently lists over 50 local farms with agricultural products for sale within the Steuben County. Applications will be considered from farms where at least 50% of the products sold are homegrown. To apply, pick up an application at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office, 3 E. Volunteer Mediators Wanted The Center for Dispute Settlement is presently seeking public service minded individuals that would be interested in becoming a Volunteer Mediator in one of their three offices in Steuben County. For more information call 377- 4143 or 776-4362. VA updating patient records VA Healthcare Nework Upstate New York will be updating all veterans' records during the upcoming months. The VA may contact veterans to verify or update their address; phone number; insurance information, including identification numbre; and other information. VA will not ask for Social Security numbers, as that is already on file. An individual from the VA Veterans Contact Center will call and identify himself or herself as a VA employee. First Presbyterian Church open for Sanctuary tours The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Bath on Pulteney Square will be open to visitors on Wednesdays, August 1, 8, and 15 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tour guides will be on hand to help visitors observe the impressive work of Louis Confort Tiffany who created the sancutary's interior design ca 1895-7. School Supply Drive Catholic Charities Turing Point in conjunction with Americorps and Centenary United Methodist Church are in the process of organizing their 2007 school supply drive for Bath area residents. Distribution date is August 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Bath, 6 Pulteney Square East, Bath. Sign ups will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. August 7 at the Catholic Charities Turning Point, 23 Liberty St., Bath and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. August 6 at the First Presbyterian Church, Main St., Prattsburgh. Students must be residents of Bah, Kanona, Savona, Cameron, Hammondsport, Prattsburgh or Bradford. People are asked to sign up so that they have a better idea of the number of supplies that are needed. Those who are signed up will be served first. Catholic Charities are asking for donations between $50 and $500. 100% of the donation goes directly to the purchase of school supplies. Please make the check payable to Catholic Charities Turning Point with 2007 School Supply Drive in the memo. Kiss a cow Miss Joyce, Youth Services Coordinator at the Dormann Library is issuing a challenge to kids ages 3-grade 5. If 150 kids sign up for the "Get a Clue at Your Library" Reading Club and 60% (90 kids) read 5 hours or more she will kiss a cow. Miss Joyce will kiss a cow at the Family Picnic Summer Finale on August 23 at about 7:30. So kids, come in, sign up, and READ! The Dormann Library is located at 101 W. Morris Street in Bath, NY. Softball Challenge The United Way Company Softball Challenge will be held from 4 p.m. till dusk August 22 and 23 at the Holding Point Recreation Complex, Horseheads. The event benefits the United Way of the Southern Tier. Entry fee will be $100 per team. Entry fee is paid 100% to the United Way and 1st, 2nd and 3rd get to claim a portion of the entry fee as part of their special events. This event is for fun and raising awarness and money for the United Way. Dates will be subject th change due to either number of entrants and/or field availablility. A book signing by Chelsey Keeler will be held at the event. She is the author of Peek-A-Blue Berry Farm "Classic Blueberry Recipes." Pre-Kindergarten program Applications are being accepted or the 2007-2008 Avoca Central School Head Start Program and district Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. Avoca school will provide a curriculum based program that meets New York State Learning Standards and helps children develop physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and creatively. "Run For Help" 5K Race "Run For Help" 5K Race will be held at 6:35 p.m. at Craig Park, West High St., Painted Post. Awards to overall male and female and to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category. Categories include: 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over. Vacation bible school • The Episcopal parishes of St. Thomas' Church in Bath and Church of the Good Shepherd in Savona have announced plans for their exciting 2007 Vacation Bible School. The theme of Growing with God's Love will be carried out on five evenings from 5-8 p.m. July 30-Aug. 3 at St. Thomas' Church, 122 Liberty St., Bath. The event is free and open to children ages 5-12. Each evening begins with a meal and concludes with worship. Pre-registration is requested. For more information call 776- 6264. 2007 P-burgh Summer Festival The 2007 Prattsburgh Summer Festival will be held Aug. 3, 4 and 5. Planned activities include town wide yard sales, crafts and food booths, bake sales, children's activities and musical events. A street dance will be held from 8-11 p.m. Aug. 3. American Red Cross course schedule • A babysitting class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The course is for youths ages 11-14. The course will teach responsibilities of a babysitter, accident prevention, emergency first aid, and how to prepare for a babysitting job. The cost is $40. • A babysitter's instructor course will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The cost to attend the course is $50. • A Mas Care disaster course will be held from 6- 9 p.m. Aug. 6 in the American Red Cross Bath Office, 110 Liberty St., Bath. The course will privide an overview of Community Service Activities that support a disaster relief. Participated will learn about the activities required for sheltering, feeding, and bluk distribution of goods during a disaster relief operation. Curtiss Museum The following exhibits will be available at the Curtiss Museum: • From July 28-29 the Curtiss Classic Motorcycle Rally will be on display. • From Aug. 10-12 the Indiana Jones Exhibit and Golden Era Gown will be on display. "Honoring our Heroes" ride The Swain Winter Resort will host an "Honoring Our Heroes" ride Aug. 4. The ride will benefit patients receiving care at the Veterans Medical Center in Bath. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and riders depart from Swain Resort at 10 a.m. This 90-100 mile trip will travel to the Bath VA Center where a brief ceremony in honor of our heroes will be held. Color Guard duties will be accomplished by the Campbell American Legion and VFW Post 524 will present a 21 gun salute. Refreshments will be available on the VA grounds. Riders will then return to Swain Resort immediately following for a "HOG Roast" and live entertainment. All motorcycles are welcome and we encourage anyone to participate in the event whether it is by riding or just attending the festivities at the resport following the tour. Help and support homeschoolers Bath Area LEAH (Loving at Education at Home) would like to extend an invitation to all new and seasoned homeschoolers to join then in the coming year for support and fellowship as we begin a new school year. Ticket includes; salt potatoes, baked beans, salad, chicken 1/4, 2 doz. clams, draft beer and music. The cost is $15 per ticket and an extra $5 for an extra dozen of clams. Pre-sale tickets only, available at the Bath American Legion Post #173 until Sept. 1. The event is for MEMBERS and GUESTS. Information available throught this site includes census records, immigration passenger lists, birth, marriage and death records, etc. This site includes over 3,000 different records. Savona School Picnic The Savona School Picnic will be held at noon Aug. 1 at the pond on Ct. Rt. 10, the Cameron Rd. In case of inclement weather, it will be held at the Cameron Grange. Anyone who ever worked in the Savona District in any capacity is welcome to attend. Retires Karen Flint, Sally Westbrook and Fred VanDuyne will be honored. Single Adult Fellowship dance Single Adult Fellowhip will present a dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4 featuring live music by Straight Country at the First Presbyterian Methodist Church, Painted Post.
