Bath VA Walking Tours To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007. Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is not cost to participate. Steuben County Historical Society The Steuben County Historical Society announces the following summer hours. Volunteer Mediators Wanted The Center for Dispute Settlement is presently seeking public service minded individuals that would be interested in becoming a Volunteer Mediator in one of their three offices in Steuben County. For more information call 377-4143 or 776-4362. VA updating patient records VA Healthcare Nework Upstate New York will be updating all veterans' records during the upcoming month. The VA may contact veterans to verify or update their address; phone number; insurance information, including identification numbre; and other information. VA will not ask for Social Security numbers, as that is already on file. An individual from the VA Veterans Contact Center will call and identify himself or herself as a VA employee. First Presbyterian Church open for Sanctuary tours The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Bath on Pulteney Square will be open to visitors on Wednesdays, August 8 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tour guides will be on hand to help visitors observe the impressive work of Louis Confort Tiffany who created the sancutary's interior design ca 1895-7. School Supply Drive Catholic Charities Turing Point in conjunction with Americorps and Centenary United Methodist Church are in the process of organizing their 2007 school supply drive for Bath area residents. Distribution date is August 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Bath, 6 Pulteney Square East, Bath. Sign ups will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. August 7 at the Catholic Charities Turning Point, 23 Liberty St., Bath and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. August 6 at the First Presbyterian Church, Main St., Prattsburgh. Students must be residents of Bah, Kanona, Savona, Cameron, Hammondsport, Prattsburgh or Bradford. People are asked to sign up so that they have a better idea of the number of supplies that are needed. Those who are signed up will be served first. Catholic Charities are asking for donations between $50 and $500. 100% of the donation goes directly to the purchase of school supplies. Please make the check payable to Catholic Charities Turning Point with 2007 School Supply Drive in the memo. Kiss a cow Miss Joyce, Youth Services Coordinator at the Dormann Library is issuing a challenge to kids ages 3- grade 5. If 150 kids sign up for the "Get a Clue at Your Library" Reading Club and 60% (90 kids) read 5 hours or more she will kiss a cow. Softball Challenge The United Way Company Softball Challenge will be held from 4 p.m. till dusk August 22 and 23 at the Holding Point Recreation Complex, Horseheads. The event benefits the United Way of the Southern Tier. Entry fee will be $100 per team. Entry fee is paid 100% to the United Way and 1st, 2nd and 3rd get to claim a portion of the entry fee as part of their special events. This event is for fun and raising awarness and money for the United Way. Dates will be subject th change due to either number of entrants and/or field availablility. American Red Cross course schedule • A babysitting class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The course is for youths ages 11-14. The course will teach responsibilities of a babysitter, accident prevention, emergency first aid, and how to prepare for a babysitting job. The cost is $40. • A babysitter's instructor course will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The cost to attend the course is $50. • A Mas Care disaster course will be held from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 6 in the American Red Cross Bath Office, 110 Liberty St., Bath. The course will privide an overview of Community Service Activities that support a disaster relief. Participated will learn about the activities required for sheltering, feeding, and bluk distribution of goods during a disaster relief operation. Bluebarry Blast Blueberry Blast will be held from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 3 W. Washington Blvd., Bath. The menu is as follows: yummy blueberry deserts, homemade ice cream and frech blueberries by the quart. Take outs available. A book signing by Chelsey Keeler will be held at the event. Pre-Kindergarten program Applications are being accepted or the 2007-2008 Avoca Central School Head Start Program and district Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. Avoca school will provide a curriculum based program that meets New York State Learning Standards and helps children develop physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and creatively. Children must be 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2007. Applications will be taken at the Avoca Central school from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 8. They will also have games, snacks and more. 16th Annual Dahlia Show The Southern Tier Dahlia Society in conjunction with the Steuben County Agricultural Society are proud to present their 16th Annual Dahlia Show. Special Education Advocacy Training The Advocacy Center announces Lay Advocacy Training for parents of children with developmental disabilities. The training will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Thursdays from Sept. 27-Nov. 15 in Bath. There is no fee for the training. Parents who complete this training may be asked to assist other families with advocacy issues in the year following the training. The training prepares parents to better advocate for their own children and to assist other parents in their area with educational advocacy. Bath Neighborhood Watch Group Bath Police Chief David Rouse, reports that the Bath Neighborhood Watch Group will be participating in the 24th Annual National Night Out, which will be held nationwide on Tuesday, Aug. 7. Locally this event will commence promptly at 9 p.m. in Pulteney Park and conclude no later than 10 p.m. Chief Rouse is asking citizens and business owners to join in this one hour event to show support for their community and the local efforts of law enforcement and Neighborhood Watch. Residents are requested to turn on their porch lights during this event and are also encouraged to bring a flashlight and join community leaders, law enforcement, neighbors, friends and family in a community foot patrol of downtown Bath. Dormann Library events "Get a Clue at Your Library" at the Dormann Library will continue this week. Friday's events will include junior fire fighter's night, teen dance with DJ, games and food vendors from 6-10 p.m. for children between the ages of 12 and 18. The event is supervised by Savona's firefighters. The cost is $30. Saturday's events are a classic car show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a cow chip bingo at 6 p.m. and music by White Mustache from 6- 10 p.m. Hot air ballon rides will be available, wheather permitting.
