No one can deny that there are nominal benefits to having a shopping center nearby. However, the costs of putting in a Wal-Mart Super Center are enormous: added strain on traffic, sewer, landfill, police and fire departments, lower tax revenue, higher property taxes, lower property values, and the outright threat to dozens of businesses in the area. With all of the negatives, it's no wonder that Wal-Mart has to buy its way into the community and pay for the public support that it is getting. With all the money and influence of the largest corporation in the world bearing down on this town, it is vital for citizens of this community to get involved in this process and make sure the Planning board is keeping the public interest foremost in their deliberations.
We encourage area residents to be informed before making up their minds. In particular, plan to attend the Bath Town Planning Board Meeting, Tuesday, August 7th, 7:30 p.m. at the Haverling High School Cafeteria. Come and learn and have your voice heard before it is too late.
