HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS • We are in the middle of summer 2007 and at the Glenn Curtiss Museum the "America" is past the "building" stage and has come out of the Restoration Shop and into the area where complete assembly can take place. The Museum has received an additional supply of materials to finish the job! The wings, tail surfaces and fuselage have had their final coat of paint. The deep red color chosen is based on written descriptions that date back to 1914. Come in and look it over! • On Thursday, August 2nd, the musicians Pioneros Del Ritmo performed in the Village Park from 6:00- 8:00pm. They were brought to 'Portians and tourists alike by Hammondsport's Five Star Bank! And on Thursday, August 9th, Kev Rowe will perform at the same time and place. • The Keuka Lake Players summer offering is The Fiddler on the Roof, performed Friday, August 3rd, and Saturday, August 4th at 7:00 pm at the Main Street Hammondsport High School auditorium. There is also a Sunday matinee at 2:00 pm today August 5th. Tickets are $9.00 for adults; the drive-in theater is gone forever (it was the way to go back in the last century) but think again! Up in Bath, the drive-in movie is the way to go! "Papa's Place" Drive-in Theater is located at 6772 Route 415. The ticket booth and concession stand open at 8:00 pm and the movie begins at dusk! The Grand Opening celebration was Friday, August 3rd. I personally have loved the Bath Drive-in. It first opened just a few years after I married Friend Husband and we'd started housekeeping in my grandfather's Sears and Roebucks 1918 house in Pleasant Valley. Within the first five years of our marriage, the Bath Drive-in was born and our first child, daughter #1. She was introduced to the open theater at an early age. Not just our little family went, but also my mother (a great movie person) and my dear Aunt Ruth, mother's sister. Ruth never took a step in her life so my dear Tom would pick her up and carry her out to the car….and away we'd go! She loved it mostly because she got to be out and about, of course. She was home taught because schools were not set up then like they are now so that children with disabilities are treated for the elderly in Steuben County? Michelle Benincasa from Steuben Coordinated Transportation hosted an area Bus Orientation for seniors who wanted to learn more about it. Michelle explained how to read the public bus schedules and learn the different routes that are available and how to access them. Those interested could also ride the bus as a group if there was room! (Space was limited and bus fees applied). The buses are available not only in Bath but also in Corning and Hornell. The Bath Bus Orientation took place at Lakeview Apartments Conference room (next to the dining room) on Friday, August 3, 2007 at 9:00am. Those interested could call HELPLINE at 1-800-346- 2211 for reservations and ask for Steuben Coordinated Transportation. • There were many alumni events in July with so many high school pals returning to Hammondsport again. Among them was Charles Champlin of California, who on August 2, 2007 got his own Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
