What's wrong with being 'friendly' to new businesses?
To the Editor,
After being at several Town Board meetings and planning board meetings all I hear from the chamber and several business owners is Wal-Mart will affect Bath in a bad way. Wal- Mart wasn't here when a lot of the stores and industries went out of business.

'Convenience shopping' not worth its many hassles
To the Editor,
Someone recently asked, "What's all the fuss about a Wal-Mart in Bath?" I'd like to reply that many of us residents of the Town and Village of Bath live here because there isn't a city-like, commercial sprawl atmosphere that Wal-Mart and other big-box stores bring to a community.

Will Wal-Mart be voted into existence due to weighty report?
To the Editor,
The Town of Bath could save itself a lot of money if it just goes to the website http://www.walmartmovie.com/ There you can read about the effect Wal-Mart has on small town business.

Don't push personal 'moral dilemma' onto entire community
To the Editor,
I've lived in Bath for 25 years, and I've repeatedly heard about "visions" and plans to revitalize Bath. Sadly, these have not come to fruition. The small vocal anti-Wal-Mart group, many of whom do not live in Bath at all, use this same rhetoric, but I have yet to see them put forth one viable, co...

Unhurried decisions often best ones
To the Editor,
Two articles in the July 29 Courier prompted me to write this letter. One is about Walgreens, the other regarding business at the Town Board meeting, which Town Supervisor Fred Muller "forgot to bring (it) up at the beginning of the meeting." He forgot!?

Wal-Mart name may hurt Bath's reputation
To the Editor,
Bath does not need to have its property taxes increased or its reputation sullied because of Wal-Mart, which has attained the dubious distinction of being the 800-pound poster child of the proverbial race to the bottom.

Beware of Bush wielding martial law
To the Editor,
Recently, amid the captivating hullabaloo of naming Anna Nicole Smith's baby's father, the media (virtually all of mainstream media) somehow managed to let a noteworthy political event slip by unreported. May 9th, President George W. Bush signed into law two executive directives: N.S.P.D. #51 and...

Back to writing; not running for office
To the Editor,
Due to the fact that I have an opportunity to become a member of a speech-writing team for directors of an international organization, I am withdrawing from the Steuben County Legislative District 3 - Bath race. As this writing position permits me to stay at "Hidden Pond Farm" and work from the...

Meal cart positive, reassuring experience
To the Editor:
Last week, I had occasion to stop and buy a bite to eat from the new Franks on Franklin meal cart operated by Catholic Charities' Teen Center in Watkins Glen. I was in a hurry and thought this was a quick and easy option. What a delightful experience it turned out to be! I was very impressed with ...

Dollar stores 'yes.' Wal-Mart 'no.' Why?
To the Editor:
I am writing concerning Wal-Mart coming to Bath. Going above Lakeview Apts., it would be so easy to go shopping. I was born and brought up in Bath. I can remember that if anything wanted to come to Bath, they voted it down.

There's no need to jump at the first store that comes along
To the Editor:
In a recent survey (2-3 years ago), taken by the Village of Bath Planning Board, residents spoke out and said, "Keep our small town atmosphere" - concerned with traffic congestion on Rt. 54/Geneva St. and the Rite Aid intersection of town.

If you don't like Wal-Mart, you don't have to go there to shop
To the Editor:
I'm writing in regard to the Wal-Mart debate. I'm 100% for Wal-Mart coming in. It would be great for us. I was under the impression this is the U.S.A. We should be able to have a Wal-Mart here. If someone opposes this, they do not have to go there.
