Legion Auxiliary The American Legion Auxiliary of Unit 173 meets every second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles Wescott Post on William St., Bath. Communication problems? The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Village of Bath Housing Authority Board The Village of Bath Housing Authority Board will meet at 4 p.m. the forth Monday of every month (except where a Holiday occurs, then it will be held the week before.) Dormann Library Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees of the Dormann Library will hold their next monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Empire Room of the Library Building, 101 W. Wine Country Toastmasters Wine Country Toastmasters will beet the first and third Tuesdays of every month from 7-8:30 p.m. at the County Health Care Facility, Co. Rte. 113, Bath. Life on the Ground Dr. Randy Weidner, Nature Center Committee Member, will present Life on the Ground: A Litter Search at 10:30 a.m. August 18 at the Mossy Bank Nature Center, Bath. The event does not include picking up of litter. Bath VA Walking Tours To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007. Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is not cost to participate. Steuben County Historical Society The Steuben County Historical Society announces the following summer hours. The Magee House, located at the Dormann-Davenport Learning Complex, West Morris St. in Bath, will be open each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during Aug. Personnel will be on hand to staff the site and offer guided tours to visitors. Volunteer Mediators Wanted The Center for Dispute Settlement is presently seeking public service minded individuals that would be interested in becoming a Volunteer Mediator in one of their three offices in Steuben County. First Presbyterian Church open for Sanctuary tours The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Bath on Pulteney Square will be open to visitors on Wednesdays, August 15 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tour guides will be on hand to help visitors observe the impressive work of Louis Confort Tiffany who created the sancutary's interior design ca 1895-7. Kiss a cow Miss Joyce, Youth Services Coordinator at the Dormann Library is issuing a challenge to kids ages 3-grade 5. If 150 kids sign up for the "Get a Clue at Your Library" Reading Club and 60% (90 kids) read 5 hours or more she will kiss a cow. So far 110 children have signed p for the reading club and 43 have finished at least 5 hours. There is still two weeks left to the reading club. Miss Joyce will kiss a cow at the Family Picnic Summer Finale on August 23 at about 7:30. So kids, come in, sign up, and READ! The Dormann Library is located at 101 W. Morris Street in Bath, NY. Softball Challenge The United Way Company Softball Challenge will be held from 4 p.m. till dusk August 22 and 23 at the Holding Point Recreation Complex, Horseheads. The event benefits the United Way of the Southern Tier. Entry fee will be $100 per team. Entry fee is paid 100% to the United Way and 1st, 2nd and 3rd get to claim a portion of the entry fee as part of their special events. This event is for fun and raising awarness and money for the United Way. Dates will be subject th change due to either number of entrants and/or field availablility. American Red Cross course schedule • A babysitting class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Setp. 29 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The course is for youths ages 11-14. The course will teach responsibilities of a babysitter, accident prevention, emergency first aid, and how to prepare for a babysitting job. The cost is $40. • A child care first aid couse will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the Corning Chapter House, 123 W. Market St., Corning. The course will privide an overview of Community Service Activities that support a disaster relief. Participated will learn about the activities required for sheltering, feeding, and bluk distribution of goods during a disaster relief operation. Help and support for homeschoolers Bath Area LEAH (Loving at Education at Home) would like to extend an invitation to all new and seasoned homeschoolers to join then in the coming year for support and fellowship as we begin a new school year. LEAH is a Statewide nondenominational Christian organization that offers support, advice and opportunities to share with fellow homeschoolers at a local level. Beginning in September, Bath LEAH will meet on the last Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Bethel Assembly of God in Bath for a potluck with activities following. Pre-Kindergarten program Applications are being accepted or the 2007-2008 Avoca Central School Head Start Program and district Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. Avoca school will provide a curriculum based program that meets New York State Learning Standards and helps children develop physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and creatively. Children must be 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2007. Applications will be taken at the Avoca Central school from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 8. "Run For Help" 5K Race "Run For Help" 5K Race will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at Craig Park, West High St., Painted Post. Curtiss Museum The following exhibits will be available at the Curtiss Museum: • From Aug. 10-12 the Indiana Jones Exhibit and Golden Era Gown will be on display. 16th Annual Dahlia Show The Southern Tier Dahlia Society in conjunction with the Steuben County Agricultural Society are proud to present their 16th Annual Dahlia Show. The show will be held on Aug. 14 and 15 at the Steuben County Fairgrounds, Bath. All are welcome. Savona Old Home Days Savona Old Home Days will be held August 24 and 25 at the Savona Village Park, Mc Coy St., Savona. Friday's events will include junior fire fighter's night, teen dance with DJ, games and food vendors from 6-10 p.m. for children between the ages of 12 and 18. The event is supervised by Savona's firefighters. The cost is $30. Saturday's events are a classic car show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a cow chip bingo at 6 p.m. and music by White Mustache from 6-10 p.m. Hot air ballon rides will be available, wheather permitting. Childrens amusements sponsored by cinderella softball. Chicken BBQ, cake walk, raffles, village historian tent and food and craft vendors will also be available. Bath area needs volunteers Do you have a little time to give back to your community? • Office for Aging's Ombudsman program needs several volunteers to advocate for seniors in long term care facilities. Must attend 36 hours of training. Can set own hours after training is provided. • Ira Davenport Hospital needs several volunteers to assist in the gift shop and to deliver mail. Volunteers needed for 3-4 hour shifts Monday through Friday. • Area Nursing Homes need several volunteers to escort residents on outings, transport residents to and from programs, to visit with residents in their rooms, or to entertain during meals. • Health Ministry of the Southern Tier needs several volunteer nurses to screen patients' blood pressure, weight, etc. for a 2-1/2 hour shift once per month. • Big Brothers/Big Sisters program at Haverling School needs volunteers to mentor children once a week on location. • ProAction Home Delivered Meals program needs several volunteer substitute drivers. Dormann Library "Get a Clue @ Your Library" at the Dormann Library is winding down. The summer reading club of "Get A Clue @ Your Library" ends on August 17. Participants have until Tuesday, August 21 to hand in their materials and receive prizes. On Friday August 17 at 1:30 p.m. the K-9 unit from the state police has been rescheduled. All ages welcome for the demonstration. The summer finale will be held on August 23. With a family picnic to start at 5:45. Bring your supper and a blanket, beverage and dessert will be provided. At 6:30 p.m. entertainment will be by the Genesee Storytellers from Rochester. Then at 7:30 p.m. Miss Joyce will kiss a cow.
