BATH - Five war protesters from the Ithaca area, calling themselves part of the Finger Lakes for Peace in Iraq and Recovery from War and Rochester Declaration of Peace groups, were arrested Monday evening, August 6, and charged with third degree criminal trespass during a demonstration at the Bath office of U.S. Rep. John R. "Randy" Kuhl Jr.

Daniel J. Burns, 47, Ellen Grady, 44, and Richard T. Saddler, 42, all of Ithaca, were charged along with Mark C. Scibilia-Carver, 54, and Christopher Tate, 46, both of Trumansburg, Bath Village Police report.

The charges are Class B misdeamors.

The group planned to deliver nearly 3,000 petitions and demand Kuhl sign a pledge to vote against further funding of the war in Iraq. Police report the five had been involved in antiwar demonstrations throughout the day Monday at Kuhl's district office on Buell Street in the village. Around 5 p.m., one of the congressman's staff twice asked the demonstrators to leave because the office was closing for the day.

The protesters refused, and police were called. The protesters ignored a police order to leave the premises, and were then arrested without incident. They were arraigned in Bath Village Court and released on their own recognizance.

They are scheduled to appear in Bath Village Court at 3 p.m. August 22.

It was the second antiwar demonstration at Kuhl's office in recent weeks. No arrests were made at the first gathering.
