HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS

• Superintendent of Hammondsport Central Schools Christopher R. Brown in the July Laker Lines, the official newsletter of Hammondsport Central School District, wrote that this summer is a very, very busy time at the school, for besides the building project going on, the school is implementing a new K-6 math series, formulating the school's Blue Ribbon Committee, provided summer reading programs, and recreative services, plus have also made changes to classrooms.

It is Superintendent Brown's hope that this summer has provided time away for students and most everyone to rest and re-energize before school reopens very soon.

Since August l3, JV & Varsiity Fall practies have officially begun with the coaches determining practice dates and times.

• In the spring 2007 issue of the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, there was a very interesting article on the second page written by Trafford L-M. Doherty, entitled "History Detectives at the Museum." It concerned Lion TV, a contract firm out of NYC that puts together video pieces for various customers including in this case, P.B.S. Doherty wrote "Their project de jour was a production for the History Detectives program. The basic plot was to prove, or disprove, the premise that a piece of linen fabric in their possession came from the NC-4. Their travels took them from the National Air & Space Musuem, to the Naval Air Museum at Pensacolo. and then to the Curtiss Museum. Apparently, NASM wasn't able to help them so the guys at Pensacola recommended that they approach us regard ing various aspects of the fabric usage on early aircraft." When a Ms.April Marks of Lion Television called Doherty, asking for permission to come to Curtiss and film a segmment of the show, Doherty said "Yes" thinking it was a great opportunity to get some serious publicity for the museum. He later found out they would be interviewing him as a "resident expert" who would ultimately do the "thumbs down" on the piece of fabric. Doherty said they were "expecting someone with a commanding presence, who,by sheer power of personality, combined with great knowledge, would bring validity and legitimacy to any occasion. Unfortunately Art Wilder had not returned from a trip south, so I Had To Do It!" He says Friday, the l3th of April was the day they came! There were soon articles apprearing in local newspapers like the Corning Leader, The Elmira Star Gazette, and The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

And, according to my son, Matthew Hereford of Cold Spring, New York, himself very interested in history, called me just the other night, to tell me what he had just seen on television! "Well, I hope it was what I have been trying to find on Public Television!" And he assurred me it was and he loved it. I had had some inkling about the program but could not seem to find it! I had to share this with my readers! Glenn Curtiss, himself, shy, shy, as my mother who knew him aways stressed, could not have been nevertheless, so proud.
