HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS

• On July 28th, 2007, Carl and Dorie Lundy of West Lake Road celebtated their 60th wedding anniversary at their lake home. In attendance were many friends, old and new; all of their six children, and extended families. Although the Lundy's 60th was April 24 of this year, the celebration was later to correspond with daughter Lisa's annual visit to their Keuka lake home. Lisa and her family in San Diego, California. This weekend of celebration was followed by a surpise visit from Carl's cousins from Sweden. The cousins visited the Lundy's for four days then continuing their USA trip in Falls Church, with Lundy's daughter, Carol.

• An average of 90 Hammondsport Central School students attended the three week Title 1 Summer Learning Program, "Get A Clue at Your Library." from July 9-27. Students focused on improving their reading and math skills in preparation for another rigerous year of school.

Hammondsport Central School welcomed also l4 of the incoming Kindergarten students to our yearly summer program staff: Mr. Stermole, Ms. Kerrick, Mrs. Buckley, Mrs. King, Ms. Tranter, Mrs. Monroy, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Faucett, Ms. Bailey, Ms. Mc Carthy, Mrs. Springstred, Mrs. Payne and Mrs. VanValkenburg. An extra big thank you to all students at tending and working so hard.

AHERA is a federal law enacted in l987 requiring all school districts to re-inspect school facilities for asbestos- Continuing building materials. Hammondsport Central School facilities have been inspected once more and response actions are planned to insure a continued safe invironment for the students and employees. Activities include training of maintenance staff to prevent disturbance of asbestos and periodic re-inspection and surveillance activities by trained personnel. Details of such activities are described in the district's AHERA Management Plan and are available for review in the District Office at the Main Street School, 8272.

Hammondsport Central School is required by law to release student names, addresses and telephone numbers for Juniors and Seniors to the military branches. However, as a parent, you may choose not to have your child's name released. However, you, the parent, must notify the school in writing before the start of the first day of school in September (which this year is the 5th) to have your childl's name removed from the list. Please direct this request to the high school office on Main Street.

• Thursday, August 30 is the final Summer Concert Series sponsored by Hammondsport's Five Star Bank. It will be The Abigail Payne Band playing from 6-8 p.m. The village and tourists alike thanks the Bank for sponsoring these fine musical Thursdays in the Village Square which has been well attended.

• Called "A Century of Cycles," having motorcycles from l903 to 2007 has been on display this summer at the Curtiss Museum and will remain on display until the middle of September. The museum features displays of early planes having more than forty motorcycles including Curtiss, Harley- Davidson, Cushman, Indian and more. Summer hours sees the museum open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Church news:

• St. James Episcopal Church: Sunday worship is at 9 a.m. with the Holy Eucharist and Sunday School. August 27 is 7 p.m. Book Study at the Rectors, and a 7:30 p.m. Al-Anon meeting in the church. The Food Pantry is open in the undercroft both Tuesday, the 28th at 3 p.m. and Saturday, the 25th at ll a.m. There is the usual l2:15 Holy Eucharist on Thursday, the 30th.

• First United Methodist Church Sunday services include an 8:30 a.m. Contempory service this week and an 11 a.m. Traditional service. Sunday School is 9:45 a.m. The church also has a Junior Church and Nursery.

• Presbytrian Churches of Hammondsport and Pulteney: These Sister Churches were notified recently of the death of a long time pastor, the Rev Richard S. Buterbaugh of Alleghany Road, Corfu, NY following a massive stroke. A service in the Indian Falls United Methodist Church in Corfu was held on Saturday, August l8 and several people from both churches attended. There was a fellowship in the church following the service and their eldest daugter, Bette, also planned a gathering at her nearby home for those wishing to stay longer with the family.

It has been announced that The Annual Ecumenical Progressive Dinner to raise money for the local chapter of the American Red Cross will be in early September and that the Hammondsport Presbytarian Church will serve the Main Course this year.

Each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. there is a Farmer's Market and Bake Sale in front of the church offering fresh fruits in season and baked good.

• Harvest Baptist Church, near the Ira Davenport Hospital, broke ground in the spring and is adding an addition that will include an auditorium, fellowship hall, office space, classrooms and nursery! Pastor of this church is Alan Lindmark.
