Bath VA Walking Tours To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007. Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is not cost to participate. Support for homeschoolers Bath Area LEAH (Loving at Education at Home) would like to extend an invitation to all new and seasoned homeschoolers to join then in the coming year for support and fellowship as we begin a new school year. LEAH is a Statewide nondenominational Christian organization that offers support, advice and opportunities to share with fellow homeschoolers at a local level. Beginning in September, Bath LEAH will meet on the last Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Bethel Assembly of God in Bath for a potluck with activities following. Clam bake chicken BBQ The Bath American Legion Post #173 will hold a clam bake chicken BBQ from 1-6 p.m. Sept. 8 at the legion. Ticket includes; salt potatoes, baked beans, salad, half-chicken, 2 doz. clams, draft beer and music. The cost is $15 per ticket and an extra $5 for an extra dozen of clams. Special Education Advocacy Training The Advocacy Center announces Lay Advocacy Training for parents of children with developmental disabilities. The training will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Thursdays from Sept. 27-Nov. 15 in Bath. There is no fee for the training. Parents who complete this training may be asked to assist other families with advocacy issues in the year following the training. The training prepares parents to better advocate for their own children and to assist other parents in their area with educational advocacy. NYS Safe Boating Course Steuben County Sheriff's Department will offer the NYS Safe Boating Course from 6-9 p.m. August 28 and 30 at the Hammondsport Fire Hall, State Route 54 in Hammondsport. Attendance in mandatory for both classes. The boating safety course is intended for all young boat operators between the ages of 10-18, who wish to operate a motor boat. This class is mandatory for everyone, regardless of age who wish to operate a personal watercraft, AKA jet ski. Those who successfully complete the class will be issued a NYS boating certificate. Savona Cinderella Softball The Savona Cinderella Softball annual meeting, election of officers and picnic will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Savona Village Park. Distracted driving During the week of August 26, the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, along with Sheriff Offices and local law enforcement from across New York State, are "Taking Action against Driver Distraction." Patrols will be focusing on what you are doing behind the wheel. Welcome home picnic for vets The Bath VA Medical Center and Crystal City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #524 invites local veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to attend a "welcome home" picnic Saturday, Sept. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Corning VFW Post, located at 281 Baker St., Corning. Admission is free for returning veterans and their family members. Food, refreshments and games will be available. VA benefits workshop The Bath VA Medical Center will present a day-long benefits and healthcare information workshop from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 in Recreation Building 92 at the facility. The workshop is open to all area veterans and their families. Attendees will be given the opportunity to learn about the full range of veterans' healthcare entitlements and benefits. Areas to be covered include cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes, fall prevention, osteoporosis, smoking cessation, stress and pain management and many others. Refreshments will be available.
