HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS

• September 7, the churches of Hammondsport held their annual progressive dinner as a fund raiser for the Bath Chapter of the Red Cross. Appetizers started off the meal at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, followed by salad at the First United Methodist Church. The Presbyterian Church served ham and all kinds of vegetables in a casserole. Dessert at St. James Episcopal Church ended the 4-course dinner for the Red Cross fund raiser brought many "thankful eaters!"

• Hammondsport Cub Scouts registered for the 2007- 08 year of meetings Thursday, September 6 at the Scout House at 96 Pulteney Street. Another day for the l-5 graders to register is September l3 begining at 6:30 p.m. Of course, Cubs may register at any time of the year, says Doris Zimmer, Adult Committe Chairwoman. Call her at 607-868-3055.

The Cubs sell Popcorn each fall, and it is their biggest fundraiser all year. The autumn sale helps them have the funds to do many things such as camping weekends and other scouting activities they enjoy doing! The sale begins this year on Friday, Sept. l4 and ends Oct. 25. Last year they raised around $6000.00 and hope to sell even more this year! Anyone desiring to get popcorn this year and has no scout contact them, call please. Money must be paid at the time of the order.

• The Wine Country Senior Citizens meet in the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, Tuesday, September 11 at 5:30 p.m. for dinner in charge of Lou and Lousise Webster. Following the meal there will be a program.

• Thursday, September 13, is the Hammondsport Women's Club Fall Dinner, which follows summer recess for them. This year it is being held at Snug Harbor, West Lake Road, Hammondsport. The committee consists of Mary Catherine Rouin, Candy Rouin, Linda Elias-Carl, and Jean Doherty. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. followed by Dinner at 6:30 p.m.

• The following 18 colleges are members of the Independent College Fund of New York State. These schools receive funds through Hammondsport's Fred and Harriet Taylor Fooundation. The purpose of the funds are to suport financial assistance to enrolled students in various colleges, but First Priority of the Scholarship Assistance Goes to Graduates of Hammondsport Central School: Alfred University, Alfred; Canisius College, Buffalo; D'Yousville College, Buffalo; Elmira College, Elmira; Hartwick College, Oneonta; Hobart & William Smith Colleges; Geneva; Houghton, Houghton; Iona College New Rochelle; Keuka College, Keuka Park; Le Moyne College, Syracuse; Manhattan College, Riverdale; Manhattville College, Purchase, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn; Roberts Wesleyan College, Ro c hester;The College of St. Rose,Albany; St.Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill; Wagner College, Staten Island;Wells College, Aurora. All are New York State Colleges.HCS Students should be sure to contact the financial aid office if they are attending one of the above colleges to be sure to make them aware of their eligibility for financial assistance. • Steuben County Department of Social Services are looking for Foster homes in this area. • The Seaplane Homecoming is scheduled at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum for September l4, 15, 16 the America reproductibe a major part of it! A very important part of the America project, the museum enlisted the help of Tony Ad ams of Congleton, Cheshire, England, to do some research! He spent three days at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton, England, compiling research on the activities of the America and its derivaties during "THE GREAT WAR". Many more of these Curtiss planes were built both in the USA and the UK. They were the only Americandesigned and built to see combat in WWI. Adams provided the museum with MUCH information concerning these planes and their use for anti- U Boat control, identifying the flying boats by their serial numbers and location and combat action that included attacking U-boats to shooting down a zeppelin in the 1914-l8 war. Adams has received a complimentary membership to Curtiss Museum in recognition of his contribution to the America history!

Church news

• St. Gabriel's Catholic Church: Everyone was invited to the blessing and dedication ceremony August 26 for the Carl Peck Memorial Garden immediately following the 11 a.m. Mass August 26.

In case someone did not respond to the recent Fall/Winter Liturgical Minister Schedule, for all altar servers, cantors, Communion ministers, greeters lectors, let the parish know of weekends you will not be available between now and December 30. Thank you!

• St. James Episcopal Church: Holy Eucharist and Sunday School, today at 9 a.m. Thursday at l2:15 p.m. Eucharist again at St. James.

The St.James Crafters did not meet during the summer months. Contact Nancy French if there are questions concerning crafts and when it starts again.

• First United Methodist Church: Last September, Pastor Paul remarked that "September is a time of endings. The end of summer and all of the different activities that summer brings like the garden, vacation time, and a return to routine duties. Septembr is also a time of beginnings as well. Students starting college, students at local school starting a new grade, perhaps making new new friends. Sunday school starting up again, etc."

• First Presbyterian

Church: Thank you to all who helped in any way to get ready/ and worked September 7 for The Annual Ecumenical Progressive Dinner to raise money for the local chapter of the American Red Cross. It was much appreciated! Keep up the good work on the 9-3 Farmer's Market and Bakesale items for sale each Saturday in front of the Church. Much appreciated!
