Communication problems?

The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Services are confidential and a neutral person is available to help individuals.

Bath VA Walking Tours

To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007.

Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is not cost to participate.

The Center for Dispute Settlement is presently seeking public service minded individuals that would be interested in becoming a Volunteer Mediator in one of their three offices in Steuben County. American Red Cross course schedule

• A babysitting class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The course is for youths ages 11-14. The course will teach responsibilities of a babysitter, accident prevention, emergency first aid, and how to prepare for a babysitting job. The cost is $40.

Help and support for homeschoolers

Bath Area LEAH (Loving at Education at Home) would like to extend an invitation to all new and seasoned homeschoolers to join then in the coming year for support and fellowship as we begin a new school year. LEAH is a Statewide nondenominational Christian organization that offers support, advice and opportunities to share with fellow homeschoolers at a local level. Beginning in September, Bath LEAH will meet on the last Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Bethel Assembly of God in Bath for a potluck with activities following.

Special Education Advocacy Training

The Advocacy Center announces Lay Advocacy Training for parents of children with developmental disabilities. The training will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Thursdays from Sept. 27-Nov. 15 in Bath. There is no fee for the training. Parents who complete this training may be asked to assist other families with advocacy issues in the year following the training.

The training prepares parents to better advocate for their own children and to assist other parents in their area with educational advocacy.

Bath area needs volunteers

Do you have a little time to give back to your community?

• Office for Aging's Ombudsman program needs several volunteers to advocate for seniors in long term care facilities. Must attend 36 hours of training. Can set own hours after training is provided.

• Ira Davenport Hospital needs several volunteers to assist in the gift shop and to deliver mail. Volunteers needed for 3-4 hour shifts Monday through Friday.

• Area Nursing Homes need several volunteers to escort residents on outings, transport residents to and from programs, to visit with residents in their rooms, or to entertain during meals.

• Health Ministry of the Southern Tier needs several volunteer nurses to screen patients' blood pressure, weight, etc. for a 2-1/2 hour shift once per month.

• Big Brothers/Big Sisters program at Haverling School needs volunteers to mentor children once a week on location.

• ProAction Home Delivered Meals program needs several volunteer substitute drivers.

Savona Cinderella Softball

The Savona Cinderella Softball annual meeting, election of officers and picnic will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Savona Village Park.

Voters of Steuben County

Notice for the Voters of Steuben County. Anyone interested in being a possible replacement to work as an Election Inspector for the upcoming elections on the following dates, Sept. 18, Nov. 6, 2007 and Feb. 5, 2008.

Pageants

The Little Miss Finger Lakes Pageant and Miss Teen Finger Lakes Pageant will be held at noon Sept. 16 at the Local 1000 Union Hall, Corning.

There will be four age category pageants for girls between the ages of 4 and 17. There also will be a Little Mister Finger Lakes Pageant for boys between ages 4 and 7.

16th Annual Open Car Show

The Wine Country Cruisers will hold their 16th Annual Open Car Show Sept. 9 at Philips Lighting Comany. Registration is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and judging will be held from 1- 2:30 p.m. 63 trophies and 200 dash plaques, goodie bags, D.J., food and soft drinks will be available. Tuesday Cruise Nights will be held at 6 p.m. at Pulteney Square Park, Bath. Preentry cost is $4 and $5 the day of the event. Portion of proceeds donated to Ronald McDonald House.

Steve Jacobs benefit

A benefit for Steve Jacobs will be held Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to midnight at the Cohocton Legion. Family hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., adults only from 7-12 p.m. Donation is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Donation includes dinner, three bands and DJ. Music donated by Too Far Gone, Against Wind, DJ Howie Jamison. Dinner menue by Bob Fleishman will include Pulled pork, salt potatoes, baked beans, cole slaw and roll from 4:30-6:30 p.m. A volleyball tournament will be held at 11 a.m., must register and be present by 1. Seeking cooks

Te Health Ministry of the Southern Tier Corning is seeking cooks for its Chili and Salsa Cookoff Sept. 29 in the Corning Centerway Parking Facility. The event will benefit the Health Minstry, which provides dental and medical services for the uninsured. It is being sponsored by Corning's Gaffer District, CASI, and various local businesses. participants can compete for freestyle chili, CASI (Chili Association Society International), salsa and best booth. 2008 Annual Implementation Plan review

A public hearing for te purpose of reviewing the 2008 Annual Implementation Plan for the Older American's Act and the NYS Community Services for the Elderly Program in Steuben County will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 27 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian Church, Pulteney Square, Bath. Building is handicapped accessible and provisions can be made for persons with hearing disabilities. The Bath VA Medical Center will be hosting the annual formal Prisoner of

War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) Recognition Ceremony to be held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the VA Medical Center Recreation Building #92. Joining the Bath VA Medical Center staff will be the Owego VFW and Auxiliary 1371 Color Guard and members of the United Auto Workers Local 1097 Veterans Committee.

Patriot Day participation

Philip J. Roche, Esq., Chairman of the Steuben County Legislature, on behalf of the members of the Legislature, he hereby calls upon residents to display the flag of the United States at half staff from their homes and businesses on "Patriot Day" and urge all residents to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. to honor and remember all who lost their lives as a result of terrorist attacks. Quilting for a cause

The Howard Historical Society Quilters will draw the winning ticket Sept. 15 for their annual quilt being raffled to benefit the Howard Old Home Day/Howard Community Day event. The quilt being raffled "Flower Garden" is on display at the Howard Public Library. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

AIP Committee meeting

The special meeting of the AIP Committee has be scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 14. The purpose of the meeting is to hear presentations by the consulting firms for the reuse of the Health Care Facility.

The workshop Hurt: Today's Youth Culture will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at St. Thomas' Church, 122 Liberty St., Bath. The workshop will be led by the Rev. Cynthia Sever, former Youth Missioner for the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester. Youth leaders, parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone who would like to understand teens better is invited to come and learn about today's youth culture and what we as adults can do to help heal the hurt our youth experience on a daily basis and ensure a better future for young people an society as a whole.

Farm City Day

The Steuben County Farm City Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Bob and Nadeen Palmer's farm on County Route 27 in Howard. This year there will be a new feature. It is the tallest corn plant, biggest pumpkin, biggest tomato, longest zucchini, longest ear of corn, and, just for fun, the tallest weed and ugliest gourd grown in Steuben County.
