Rams take Keuka Classic BATH - Bath Haverling's offensive pressure was too much for Arkport as the Rams downed the Blue Jays 3- 0 to win the Keuka Classic Saturday, Sept.1. "For this early in the season, it was a very intense game - Arkport has a great soccer team," said Bath head coach Matt Hill. For the game, the Rams outshot Arkport 22-5, so you had the feeling that something would have to crack sooner or later. The first crack came with 17:13 remaining in the first half as tournamen t MVP Justin Brown redirected a free kick from Dylan Wales into the net in a most peculiar way - with his back to the goal. "The first goal was just tricky. He just backheeled it and I don 't think anyone was expecting that," Hill said. Arkport was outshot 13-2 in the opening half, but got steady stops from its defense and goal keeper Nick Smith to keep the score 1-0 entering the half. On two occasions, Sean Stillman made timely sliding blocks on close range shots by Bath players. The second half had a dejavu feel about it, as Bath dominated possession with its passing game. Bath increased its lead to 2-0 with 11:37 left in the contest on a heads up play by Jason Carpenter. For the second time in the contest, Carpenter intercepted a goal kick off the foot of Smith and bounced a shot off the right post and into the net. Wales closed the scoring with five minutes to go when he blasted a 30- yard shot, off a Jon Smith feed, through Smith's hands. Smith closed the game with six saves. Bath keeper Mike Rossi needed just four saves to record the shutout. Rossi, Wales, Nick Badeau and Dylan Wales were named to the all-tournament team for Bath, while Stillman, Joe Markel and Justin Henry were chosen from Arkport. Campbell-Savona prevailed in the tournament consolation game, defeating Elmira Southside 4-2 in an overtime shootout. The game was tied at 1-1 after regulation as Sean Rumsey scored from Camden Wright for the Panthers. |
