Explore world of farming Sept. 22

PHOTO PROVIDED A farm's pumpkin patch is always a hit with farm visitors on Steuben County's annual Farm City Day. The annual celebration of agriculture will be Sept. 22.
HOWARD - Spend a Saturday with your family on the farm. The annual Steuben County Farm-City Day will be held this year at the Robert Palmer Farm on County Route 27 in Howard on September 22 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The FREE event is coordinated by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County and hosted by Robert and Nadeen Palmer and the Steuben County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board.

This educational, fun day gives the public a first-hand, behind the scenes look at how dairy facility works. Come tour the farm, take a horse drawn wagon ride, and have the children pet friendly farm animals. See huge farm equipment and sample local farm products. Activities include a corn maze, a chance to hand-milk a cow, pick a pumpkin and try your skill at games like the potato toss. Numerous agricultural vendors will be on hand with displays.

Farm-City Day provides an opportunity to explore the inter-dependence of farming, the business community, land use, food production and our environment. Vendors will have local farm products for sale, and exhibitors, such as the Potato Growers Association, will have information and answer questions. Spend time with the people who provide food to feed your family and visit with those individuals and businesses that provide services and support to Steuben County farms.

Directions to the Palmer Farm are follow I- 86 to Exit 35, Howard and follow signs. Groups are encouraged to attend. For additional information about Farm-City Day or to become a contributor, call Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County at 664-2300.
