Avoca Historical Society to host Fall fest

AVOCA - The Avoca Historical Society on Sept. 29 will show the community its ongoing "work in progress," the Avoca village museum, which the society acquired in 2006.

Volunteers continue to work on the interior of the Griswold Street building, but already the interior is filling with documents and other historical items that had been stored in the home of the late Grace Mary Fox. Historical Society member Art Wightman of Avoca has been leading the renovation effort.

The building will be open for visits from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., coinciding with activities in the Gazebo Park on Main Street. This year's theme is "native Thanksgiving," and activities will include a scarecrow and pumpkin decorating contest, a wagon ride, antique farm equipment displays and a pie baking contest.

Also, local history buffs are invited to share with the Historical Society their knowledge of Avoca lore, specifically and first and second name of Avoca. Anyone with the correct information may enter his or her name in a special drawing, to be held at 3 p.m.
