State DEC seeks input on Keuka Highlands project
BY JEFFERY SMITH THE LEADER
BATH - State environmental officials are seeking public input to help forge the future of the Keuka Highlands Unit Management area.

The 3,688 acre area includes Pigtail Hollow State Forest and the Urbana State Forest.

The area, located north of Hammondsport, does not include any of the fishing access sites along the Cohocton River or Cold Brook/Keuka Inlet.

The plan will define future goals for the area and be used as a tool to improve the area.

Projects completed under the 1993 plan update include the construction of a wildlife viewing platform, two parking areas, a dozen timber sales and the planting of more than 31,000 Norway Spruce seedlings. Profits from the lumber sales exceeded $100,000.

The draft plan is expected to be completed in the summer or fall of 2009. Once the draft is completed a meeting will be held to share details with the public.
