Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary of Unit 173 meets every second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles Wescott Post on William St., Bath. The next meeting will be held on Oct. 8.

Communication problems?

The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Services are confidential and a neutral person is available to help individuals.

Village of Bath Housing Authority Board

The Village of Bath Housing Authority Board will meet at 4 p.m. the forth Monday of every month (except where a Holiday occurs, then it will be held the week before.) The next meeting will be held on Sept. 24.

Dormann Library Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees of the Dormann Library will meet the second Monday of every month except where a holiday occurs then it will be the following Monday. They will hold their next monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Empire Room of the Library Building, 101 W. Morris St., Bath.

Improving driver safety

The staff of the Caregiver Resource Center of the Steuben County Office for the Aging can help sort out issues and make suggestions for improving elderly driving safety.

Victims of Domestic Violence Women's Support Group

Victims of Domestic Violence Women's Support Group will meet from 6-7 p.m. Thursday evenings. The next meeting will be held Sept. 20. For more information call 1-800-286-3407.

Wine Country Toastmasters

Wine Country Toastmasters will beet the first and third Tuesdays of every month from 7-8:30 p.m. at the County Health Care Facility, Co. Rte. 113, Bath. The meeting will discuss enhancing communication and leadership skills. The next meeting will be held on Oct. 2.

History of the Bath Area will be presented by Dr. Joseph Paddock, Bath Historian at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at the Mossy Bank Nature Center, Bath.

Bath VA Walking Tours

To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007.

Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is not cost to participate.

American Red Cross course schedule

  • A babysitting class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The course is for youths ages 11-14. The course will teach responsibilities of a babysitter, accident prevention, emergency first aid, and how to prepare for a babysitting job. The cost is $40.

    Special Education Advocacy Training

    The Advocacy Center announces Lay Advocacy Training for parents of children with developmental disabilities. The training will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Thursdays from Sept. 27-Nov. 15 in Bath. There is no fee for the training. Parents who complete this training may be asked to assist other families with advocacy issues in the year following the training.

    The training prepares parents to better advocate for their own children and to assist other parents in their area with educational advocacy.

    Seeking cooks

    Te Health Ministry of the Southern Tier Corning is seeking cooks for its Chili and Salsa Cookoff Sept. 29 in the Corning Centerway Parking Facility. The event will benefit the Health Minstry, which provides dental and medical services for the uninsured. It is being sponsored by Corning's Gaffer District, CASI, and various local businesses. participants can compete for freestyle chili, CASI (Chili Association Society International), salsa and best booth.     2008 Annual Implementation Plan review

    A public hearing for te purpose of reviewing the 2008 Annual Implementation Plan for the Older American's Act and the NYS Community Services for the Elderly Program in Steuben County will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 27 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian Church, Pulteney Square, Bath. Building is handicapped accessible and provisions can be made for persons with hearing disabilities. Copies of the Plan will be available at the Office for the Aging, 3 East Pulteney Square, Bath by Sept. 25.

    16th Annual Senior Forum

    The 16th Annual Senior Forum will start at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at the Presbyterian Church, Pulteney Square, Bath. Events include:

  • From 8:30-9 a.m. continental breakfast

  • From 9-9:40 a.m. public hearing

  • From 9:50 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m. workshops

  • From 12:30-1 p.m. lunch and entertainment

    Luncheon served by ProAction with donations requested. Lunchtime entertainment provided by the Hon. Joe Latham at the piano. There is no charge for workshops. Workshops, (choice of two) are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking lot attendants will be available for assistance.

    "Harvest Heartbeat for Ira"

    The 10th Annual "Harvest Heartbeat for Ira" arts and crafts fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Bath V.F.W, Route 54 North, Bath. the fair, sponsored by The Davenport & Taylor Auxiliary, will host a variety of Finger Lakes Arts and Crafs vendors featuring their handcrafted wares.

    The Auxiliary will sponsor a homemade baked goods sales, several drawings throughout the day, and will also have order froms available for the annual Georgia Pecan Sales Drive. Free face painting will be offered for children.

    Goffee and donuts will be available from 9-10:30 a.m., followed by a luncheon at noon. Menu to include Cindy's famous homemade macaroni and cheese, chili, soup, sandwiches and beverages.

    proceeds from the fair will benefit Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital and the Fred & Harriett Taylor Health Center.

    Family Life Ministries celebrate 50th

    Family Life Ministries will celebrate its 50th anniversary with live concerts and special performances starting Monday, September 24. The event will bring popular Christian musicians, comedians, and speakers to the area. There will also be opportunities to meet performing artists, hear special testimonies, and participate in a book signing. Activities for kids will be available Saturday afternoon.

    Tickets are still on sale for Monday, Sept. 24 and Saturday, Sept. 29 performances. Family Life Network presents Michael Card on Monday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. and Go Fish on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. Visit www.fln.org for more artist information.

    Avoca Historical Society

    The Avoca Historial Society on Sept. 29 will show the community its ongoing "work in progress," the Avoca village museum.

    The building will be open for visits from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., coinciding with activities in the Gazebo Park on Main Street. This year's theme is "native Thanksgiving," and activities will include a scarecrow and pumpkin ecorating contest, a wagon ride, antique farm equipment displays and a pie baking contest.

    Antique appraisals & sale

    St. Thomas' Episcopal Church is hosting an Antiques Appraisal Fair and Sale on Saturday, Sept. 29. Quality dealers will offer their wares for sale from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. There is no admission to view the dealers' booths. Appraisers will appraise your valuables for $5 per item between 11

    a.m. and 3 p.m. Appraisers will include Lon Knickerbocker (glass), Jim Goodling (all antiques but specializing in furniture, art, rugs), and Betty Rossi (general antiques, speciality in dolls, china, art & ephemera); there may also be a coin appraiser.

    Between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., delicious food will be available for lunch including homemade desserts and BBQ chicken (take outs available).

    Penny Social & Bake Sale

    A penny social and bake sale will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Charles E. Wescott American Legion, 14 W. William St., Bath. Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Drawing starts at 2 p.m. All proceeds go to benefit Jr.Auxiliary and Unit 173 Auxiliary programs. Donations of items can be left at Post Home prior to Sept. 28, (no clothes, shoes or broken items please.) Bake sale items can be brought in on Sept. 29. Raffles and door prizes will be available.

    Bath Area Landlords Association

    The next meeting of the Bath Area Landlords Association will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 in the Conference Room at Lakeview Apartments, 105 Geneva St., Bath. The topic will be "defining our association."

    Pulteney Park parking restrictions

    The Bath Police Department will impose parking restrictions on the South and West sides of Pulteney Park from approximately 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27. The action is being taken to assist the Steuben County office for teh Aging, which will be holding their annual senior forum and public hearing at the First Presbyterian Church. Typically this event involves approximately 150 participants.

    For the day of Sept. 27 (entire day only,) the Bath Police Department will honor parking permits at any parking meter location.

    Wineglass Marathon preparations

    Bath Police Chief David Rouse reports that the Village of Bath is making preparations for the Wineglass Marathon, which is being held Sept. 30. This is necesitating parking restrictions on certain streets in which the marathon will be running.

    The Bath Village Street Department will erected temporary no parking signs along the North side of West Steuben Street. Although the signs will be erected on Sept. 28, enforcement action will not commence until 6 a.m., Bath Police will prohibit parking at meters on both sides of West Steuben Street as well as the North side of East Steuben Street. The parking restrictions will be lifted at the conclusion of the Wineglass Marathon activities in the Village of Bath.

    The Bath Police Department apologizes for this inconvenience but emphasizes that this is being done to provide for the safety of 1,000 participants in the Wineglass Marathon.

    Educational seminar

    The Alheimer's Association and Steuben County Office for the Aging will present an educational seminar from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Wayland Library, 101 West Naples St., Wayland. Topic will be Caregiving for the Sandwich Generation. Registration is required.     Chicken dinner

    The Prattsburgh Historical Society will host a Chicken dinner with a guest speaker on Thursday, Sept. 27. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. Bring a dish to pass and table setting.

    Guest speaker Michael Horigan will begin his presentation on Hellmira, "Death Camp of the North" at 7 p.m. The Historical Society will also be honoring our "Hero of Prattburgh."

    Steuben County Industrial Development Agency

    A regular meeting of the Steuben County Industrial Development Agency will be held at 12 p.m. Sept. 27 at their offices at 7234 Route 54, Bath.

    Fall Story Hour

    Fall Story Hour at the Savona free library will begin on Oct. 3 from noon to 1 p.m. for ages 3-5 years. There will be stories, crafts and music. Please call 583-4426 to register or stop in at the library, 15 McCoy St., Savona.

    Bath school meeting

    A meeting of the Members of the Policy Committee of the Bath Central School Board of Education will be held at 7 a.m. Sept. 24 in the District Office.
