HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS

• Retired teachers and staff from Hammondsport Central School will enjoy breakfast and fellowship at the Bath Chat-A-Whyle on Wednesday, October 17, at 9 a.m.

• Yesterday, October 13, at 10:30 a.m. at The Mossy Bank Nature Center in Bath, Dr. Joseph Paddock gave the last presentation for the year, entitled "A History of Mossy Bank."

• The Grape Pumpkin Festival in Hammondsport was held on October 13. There were lots of attractions in the heart of the business district in the Village Square, including pumpkin crafts, face painting, and raffles. Grapes, pumpkins, and fall foliage items were for sale, plus special foods like sugar waffles and fried dough. Many 'Port organizations came out for the festivities and to raise funds for their nonprofit organizations before winter arrives. In the afternoon, there was live music for all ages, or stores to be pressed for the big drink of autumn - fresh cider. To those who provided the presses - thanks again.

• When school started this Sept., all students in grades 3-6 had a new class for one 45-minute period every six days. Preparation for success is the class and it focuses on many topics, including character development, bullying prevention, peer pressure, self-confidence, dealing with stress and homework, and selfrespect. Students take part in activities such as viewing simulated situations, discussing ways of dealing with the situations presented, and problem solving. The classes are taught by Mrs. Conover, grade 3, and Ms. Chaffee, grades 4-6. Parents wishing more details about the class: contact the teachers or Mr. Bower at 607-569-5200.

• Michelle Shattuck of Corning, who has been an Arc of Steuben board member for ten years, is now Board President. the Hammondsport Rotary Club, succeeding president Lucile Walbridge. The club met at the Pleasant Valley Inn early in the summer for dinner and business. Past-president of Rotary, Willie Bilancio, presented a "Courage Award" to outgoing president Walbridge. The "Rookie of the Year Award" went to Linda Bailey. Rotary Club meets Wednesday evenings at the Park Inn on the Village Square.

Hammondsport church news

• St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, 78 Shethar Street: Maureen O'Neill, Pastoral Administrator; Rev. Peter Anglaaere, Sacramental Minister. Two new teachers for religious education are Robin Sherman and Diana Sermonis, who are teaming to teach a combined grades 2-3 class. The other teachers are Denece Gossie, Bob Matthewson, and Patty Shippee.

Today, October 14, is the annual CROP Walk. for those in need. From the proceeds of the walk, 75% goes to worldwide programs and 25% goes to the local food pantries and Meals on Wheels.

• St. James Episcopal Church, corner of Main and Lake streets. Rev. Sandra Curtis, Rector. Last Sunday, October 7, St. James celebrated its annual Harvest Festival, beginning with light refreshments on the lawn. The church service was at 10:30 a.m. following Holy Eucharist. A bountiful harvest dinner followed, with choice tip sirloin, salads, vegetables, homemade bread, and dessert. This wonderful meal was free to all. God provided through His abundance, trusting that those who attended would enjoy His company with family and friends.

• First Methodist Church, 35 Lake Street. Rev. Paul Rowley, Pastor; 8:30 a.m. Contemporary Service; 9:45-10:45 a.m. Sunday School; 11 a . m . combined into one 10 AM service.

• First Presbyterian Churches of Hammondsport and Pulteney, Rev. Anne Waasdorp, Interim Pastor; Pulteney worship at 9:30 a.m. and Hammondsport at 11 a.m. Last week, October 7, a combined service was held in Pulteney at 11 a.m. Both churches supplied food for a coffee hour that followed.

Each Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Pulteney Church is prayer and Bible study for both churches.

Adult Sunday School has begun at the Hammondsport Church with Jim Walling, leader. The Sunday School meets today at 10 a.m. in the undercroft. The classes start with a videotape lesson, followed by discussion. All are welcome to attend.

At the Grape Pumpkin Festival on Saturday in the Square, the Hammondsport Church held a fall produce and bake sale in front of the church. Buterbaugh. He died on August 6 at the age of 88 at Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital following a massive stroke. In retirement he lived in Corfu, New York, and served as the chaplain at the Batavia VA. His survivors include his wife, Clara (Jeanne) Henne Buterbaugh of Corfu; daughters Elizabeth "Bette" (Harold) Cook of Corfu, Jeanette (Norman) McMillian of New York City, and Dorothy (the late Michael) Stradinger of Pasadena, Texas. He was the brother of Freda (the late Edward) Gall of Baltimore; grandfather of three: Jean Cook of Virginia; Keneth Cook of Corfu, and Richard (Tammy) Cook of Batavia; and great-grandfather of six children. Re v . Buterbaugh became a Presbyterian minister following his service in the army during WWII and the Korean War. A memorial service for him was held at Indian Falls United Methodist

Church on August 18.

• Since June of this year, Deborah Bartlett has been president of Registration forms for walkers and sponsors were available last week. Many people are donating their "legs" and "feet" as well as their hearts to raise money to provide food Traditional Service. Junior Church and Nursery, for infants through third graders, are offered at both services. On the fifth Sunday of the month, the two services are Grapes, pumpkins, pies, and breads were available.

One of the Hammondsport- Pulteney pastors for many years was Rev. Richard Samuel Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Houston, Texas. The Buterbaughs wintered for several years with daughter Dorothy in Texas. Jeanne plans to do the same this year.
