Driver faces manslaughter charges

BATH - Five months after a head-on collision killed a 56-year-old Cameron man on County Route 2 in Rathbone, the driver of the other car was indicted on four charges related to the crash, including two counts of manslaughter.

Kevin J. Metarko, 23, of Addison, was charged in an indictment handed up Sept. 25 in Steuben County Court.

He is free without bail awaiting further court proceed ings, the next of which is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 15, in Steuben County Court.

Metarko was indicted on charges of seconddegree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while impaired by drugs and driving while impaired by a combination of drugs and alcohol.

According to authorities, Metarko was driving under the influence around 4 a.m. April 21 when he crossed the centerline and struck the vehicle of David P. Galusha.

Galusha, 56, was partially ejected from his vehicle and died from multiple trauma injuries, according to state police.

His 26-year-old daughter, Lisa Galusha, also of Cameron, was a passenger in the car and was treated and released from a local hospital.

Metarko was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital where he was treated for head injuries.

If convicted of the most serious charges lodged against him, Metarko faces up to 15 years in state prison.
