Avoca nets the perfect season WAYLAND - The Avoca girls tennis team finished off a perfect 16-0 season and claimed the Section V, Class C team crown with a 4-1 victory over Bloomfield on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The Tigers are 32-0 dating back to the beginning of the 2006 season and have won back-to-back sectional titles under head coach Dave Hall. Jennifer Wlodarczyk led the Tigers at first singles with a three set victory over Brittany White after falling behind one set early in the match. Jennifer lost the first set 6-4 before coming back to win the second set 6-4. The third set went into a tie break and Jennifer closed out the match, winning 7-5. Brittany Bowen also won her singles match in three sets for Avoca. After Bowen won the first set of her third singles match, 6- 2, Paige Turnbull came back in the second set with a 6-3 win. Bowen regained her touch in the third set to close the door, 6-3. After taking two of three singles matches, Avoca clinched the sectional title by sweeping doubles competiton. The first doubles team of Ashley Edwards and Nicole Becker won in two sets over Bloomfield's Prema Murphy and Tiffany Clay. Teammates Sarah Fervan and Jackie Wlodarczyk then sealed the sweep with a three set victory at second doubles, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. "The doubles teams worked together very well," Hall said. "Their teamwork was a pleasure to watch." Five members from the Avoca team competed in the semifinals and finals of the individual sectionals held on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and 21, in midtown Rochester. "I'm incredibly proud of these young ladies," said Hall. "They worked very hard, very well, very smartly." |
