HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS

• Today is the last October Sunday of live music at Heron Hill Winery, on the west side of Keuka Lake. The Rochester Brass and Electric performs from 12:30 to 4:30 P.M.

• On Monday, October 29, there will be an HCS Freshman trip to the VA and County Office Building in Bath.

• Thursday Nighters will meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Hammondsport Presbyterian Church. Dinner to pass and then members will view a video on Operation Christmas Child's Box, a program started by Franklin Gram for children in third world countries. A discussion to follow. Hosts are Janny and Koster, president and member of the church.

• At Hammondsport Central School on Wednesday, October 31, National Honor Society students will conduct their Halloween food drive for the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Hammondsport. NHS members are trick-ortreating for the pantry from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Local citizens are asked to give "treats" of canned foods.

• The Lady Lakers volunteered last month at the Finger Lakes Humane Society. Donations were given of dog and cat food along with staples like garbage bags. In addition, the group ran three different work stations and rotated shifts from dog and cat needs to stuffing envelopes for mailers. Lady Lakers encourage all Port people to remember the needs of these displaced animals as they await a loving home.

• Brian Stachnik and Ashlee Julia Carol Travis were selected Students of the Quarter for the fourth marking period of the 2006-2007 school year. These students were nominated by their teachers for their outstanding contributions to HCS. To be eligible, students must be in grades 9 through 12, hold a Class A Pass, and maintain an 85 or above average. Congratulations to Brian and Ashlee Julia Carol!

• Steuben County Youth in Government met Monday, October 22, in the Bath Court House with Richard McCandless, coordinator-consultant. Meetings began in September. Following turning in journal reports at 8:30 A.M., the students had a 9:00 A.M. Reality Check with Mrs. DeGaetano and then attended the county legislative meeting. Following lunch and interviews with the legislators at noon, they visited with Mr. Greeley of the Probation Department. Steuben County High School representatives from Hammondsport include: Will Bailey, whose legislator is David Stachnik; Kalyn Fries, legislator Pat McAllister from Wayland; Kelsy Lanphere, legislator Ken Isaman from Arkport; Sylvia Sable, legislator Phil Roche from Painted Post. Bath Haverling High representatives are Leah Bates, legislator L. Ronald Nielsen, Bath; Emily Johns and Jessica Sokolowski, both with legislator Pat Donnelly, Bath. (Other area students participating will be mentioned in later issues.)

• The Keuka Lake area Red Hat Society leader, Ms Lillian Elwood, says that the army platoon the local group has befriended is scheduled to return to the States very soon. The Red Hatters hosted the soldiers for dinner at the Curtiss Museum just before they left for Iraq many months ago. Many Red Hatters have kept track of

the soldiers while they have

been in the war. Now the group will welcome them back with a dinner somewhere in the area. Ms. Elwood would like local Red Hatters to offer suggestions of where to go and what to do. Please call her ASAP.

Church news:

• St. Gabriel's Catholic: Maureen O'Neill, Pastoral Administrator: Rev. Peter Anglaaere, Sacramental Minister.

• St. Gabriel's fall work was scheduled for Saturday, October 27. Many men, women, teens, and younger took part to help winterize the buildings and grounds. They brought their own tools and worked until the mission was completed.

• There has been a Catholic Ministries Appeal 2007 - "Building the Faith" - to which many parishioners have already made their pledge. The members have pledged a little over $4,000 so far for the needed $15,147 by the appeal. Pledge forms, envelopes, and an information brochure are on the back table of the church.

• Remember that yoga classes are being offered at St. Gabriel's twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:30 A.M. Beginners are welcome. Wear loose clothing and bring an exercise mat and blanket. Phone 607- 346-1961 for more information.

• St. James Episcopal: Located on the corner of Main and Lake Streets. The Rev. Sandra Curtis, Rector. Assisting the Rector at the October 28 Eucharist are: C. VanHouten, Chalice; J. Grillo, Acolytes; C VanHouten, D. Lundy, Readers; T. and S. Dykas, Ushers. Joan Rogerson has been in charge of coffee hours for October. Host for October 28 is Adrienne Hutcheson.

• First United Methodist Church: The Rev. Paul Rowley, Minister. 8:30 A.M. contemporary service: 9:45 to 10:45 A.M., Sunday School; 11:00 A.M., traditional service. Junior church & nursery offered for infants through third graders during both services. On the fifth Sunday of the month, the two services are combined with a 10:00 A.M. service for all.

• October has been Pastor Appreciation Month. Today, the 28th, there is a brunch for Rev. Rowley from 10:00 to 10:45 A.M.

• Onnalee Clark, who serves in many roles besides her job as secretary of the church, has been named Lay Person of the Year by the local church. She is Christian Education Director, UMW secretary, Memorial Fund Treasurer, and serves on the Finance and Outreach Committee.

• First Friday Fellowship on November 2 will meet in the Methodist Church. The service is open to all. On Saturday, November 3, there will be a men's breakfast at

8:00 A.M. at the church. Also, the church reminds all members that Daylight Savings ends at 2:00 A.M. on November 4. Turn your clock back one hour.

• The First Presbyterian Churches of Hammondsport and Pulteney: Interim Pastor Rev. Anne Waasdorp at both churches. Sunday services are 9:30 A.M. at Pulteney and 11:00 A.M. at Hammondsport.

• Tuesday evening, October 30, Bible study at the Pulteney Church at 6:45 P.M. with Bob Illi on "Paul and the Ephesians."

• Make a Difference Day was Saturday, October 27, with Hammondsport church members participating. The National Project CARE had groups going to the Taylor Health Center and the Steuben County Health Center to visit and entertain patients at both centers.

• The Hammondsport church has purchased 32 new chairs for the undercroft in memory of four members: Mary Dean, Mary Leiderbach, Laura Lobeck, and George Veley. The church wishes to thank all who gave money in memory of the quartet of people who loved their church and always worked

hard for it.

• It was announced on October 21 at the Port church during a special congregational meeting that three members have been nominated for a committee to find a permanent pastor. They are John Wilderman, Lucile

Walbridge, and Lyn +

Chadwick. Earlier that morning at the Pulteney Church, elected to the same committee were Fred Schulte, Mary Nichols, and Barbara Faber.
