Bath blanks Waterloo, headed to Section V, Class B semifinals
BY SHAWN VARGO THE LEADER

BATH - The Bath Haverling football team provided its cheerleaders with a hearty workout Saturday, Oct. 20, in its Section V, Class B quarterfinal game against Waterloo.

The second-seeded Rams blankedthe No. 7 Indians 46-0- and since the cheerleaders do a push-up for every point scored, it added up to 190 push-ups apiece for the young ladies.

"That's really nice. They've been working hard," Bath coach Wayne Carroll said of the cheerleaders. "It's nice to have that kind of spirit behind us."

As for Carroll's squad, the Rams didn't waste any time in letting everyone know how focused they were - offensively and defensively.

Following a Waterloo threeand out to start the game, Bath methodically marched 55 yards in eight plays and scored on an Andre McCloud 14-yard run.

The Rams' defense helped set up the team's next score when it recovered a fumble on the Waterloo 28 two plays later. Bath upped the lead to 14-0 when McCloud scampered in from 10 yards away.

McCloud scored the next time he touched the ball, slashing to the left and breaking away for a 30-yard TD- with 57 seconds still left in the first quarter.

"You never know how kids are going to respond. We don't play any common opponents, so I was a little concerned," Carroll said. "But I'm really proud of our effort."

Bath set up for its first possession of the second quarter on the Waterloo 30 following a Matt Whedbee interception of Waterloo's Jordon Cook.

Brett Havens carried the ball on three of the drive's four plays and capped things off with a 1-yard plunge.

With its offense and defense hitting on all cylinders, it was just a matter of time before the Rams' special teams got into the fray. It did when Cody Hutcheson blocked a Waterloo punt, allowing Bath to take over at the Indians' 18-yard line.

That happened to be the perfect distance for Jake Kuver to hit Hutcheson with a touch down pass on the ensuing play. Hutcheson not only made a nice catch, but got his feet down, just inside the goal line pylon. Kuver was a perfect 4- for-4 throwing the ball for 28 yards.

"I was happy with our passing attack. We threw the ball well today," Carroll said.

Bath's final score of the first half came with 1:19 left when McCloud converted a third and-23 play into a 47-yard touch down run. McCloud finished with 106 yards on 13 totes. Havens was next with 69 yards on 11 carries.

"The running backs ran well, just about everyone scored on offense," Carroll said.

Bath's final scoring drive of the game was a clinic- a 17- play, 83-yard masterpiece that lasted nearly the entire third quarter.

Waterloo picked up a first down in the fourth quarter- its first of the game, but was stuffed for negative yards on onconsecutive tackles by Hutcheson and Danny Herrick. The Rams allowed just 68 yards rushing and minus-6 passing.

"We really played a nice football game," Carroll said. "We think 28-0 is a perfect high school football game- so today was definitely a perfect football game for the Rams."

Bath advanced to face No. 6 Marcus Whitman, which upset No. 3 East Rochester-Gananda 20-14 on Friday, Oct. 19. The teams will square off at Rochester's Paetec Park at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28.

"We're just happy to be going to Rochester. We haven't done that since 2003," Carroll said. "This is a nice step for the football program. We're looking forward to the challenge."
