HAVERLING CROSS COUNTRY
Bath cross country runners honored
It is rare that a Cross Country team has one frontrunner. The Bath rams are enjoying a unique situation. The cross country team has two such athletes-identical twins, Derek and Darren Snyder. "By far, they are the best runners I have ever coached" states Bob Ainsworth. Besides winning most of their meets this year, Derek and Darren are becoming well-known on the state level. "Everywhere we go people are asking me about those two guys from Bath," ... "We were up at the McQuaid Invitational in Rochester a few weeks ago. No sooner did I step off the bus when this man approaches me and asks if this is the school that has those Snyder boys." Both Derek and Darren are ranked at the state level in Class C Cross Country. Several colleges are taking an interest in both boys. If it is very common to see college coaches approaching both of them at the larger meets. "I am receiving about two letters a week from schools interested in both Derek and Darren," said Ainsworth.
Besides for their superior athletic ability, the guidance and leadership they provide for the younger runners in invaluable. Derek and Darren lead by example. They are the hardest workers on the team and are always leading encouragement to their teammates. Besides working jobs after school, Derek and Darren are both high honor students.
With the fall season dominated by the popular team sports, few people realize that this is the most successful Cross Country season Bath has enjoyed since the 1970's. Derek and Darren are the two key reasons why. Talented and dedicated sophomore runners Garrison Koehler, Sam Armstrong and Sean Ainsworth share the desire to win and the willingness to pay the price of success. With this core of runners, led by Derek and Darren, the rams figure to be a factor in this year's sectional competition. Regardless of the outcome, Bath could not be led by two finer young men.
