Write-in campaigns fall short HAMMONDSPORT - A write-in campaign for the incumbent Urbana supervisor and two town councilmen beaten in the October Republican primary came up short in Tuesday's general election. Supervisor Richard Gardiner pulled in 233 write-in votes, according to unofficial results, while the Republican nominee, Gordon Lanphere, garnered 418 regular votes. In the election for Urbana town councilmen, write-in candidates Thomas Chadwick and L. John Webster won 208 and 184 write-in votes respectively. The unofficial results placed them well behind Republican candidates Barbra Yahn (392) and Paul Martuscello (355). Democratic candidates for the Urbana town council seats, Alzina Turner and William Moore, won 114 and 131 votes respectively. Lanphere, Yahn and Martuscello beat the incumbent supervisor and councilmen in the aftermath of contentious town debates over the purchase of land for a public beach park and the establishment of a new water district south of Hammondsport. Both initiatives were defeated in public referendums. |
