SAVONA - The Pathways Kids Adventure Club at Campbell Savona Elementary School recently created a taste of home for overseas troops, as students decorated Christmas cards with potato prints.
And not just any potatoes. These were New York potato varieties. The kids used Adirondack BlueAdirondackRedand Andover potatoes which are all new varieties from the Cornell Breeding Project released by the now-retired Dr. Robert Plaisted, a Steuben County native.
The project is part of a sixweek series offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County's 4-H Afterschool Program.
4-H afterschool programs combine fun and learning in a way that helps youth develop lifelong skills such as leadership, critical thinking and teamwork.
Extension educator Cindy Messinger says the program offers "research-based, ready-to-use 'learning by doing' curricula on a wide variety of topics. 4-H Afterschool taps into Cornell University's resources and research to develop curricula, plan programs and train staff.
The Campbell Savona Kids Adventure Club site is overseen by Angela Burger. Cooperative Extension offers 4-H Afterschool programs throughout Steuben County. For more information, contact Cooperative Extension at 664-2300 or visit www.putknowledgetowork.c om.
