Rev. Salvatore A. Mistretta

HAMMONDSPORT - The Rev. Salvatore A. Mistretta was born Jan. 31, 1933 in Brooklyn. He graduated from Boys' High School, Brooklyn; Hunter College; and General Theological Seminary. He was ordained to the Episcopal priesthood on March 17, 1968 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He served in parishes in Roseville, Minnesota, Hyde Park, Staatsburgh, Dansville, Hammondsport, Mt. Morris and Branchport.

Until his final illness in Nov., he preached and celebrated the Holy Eucharist at St. John's Church, Catharine, once a month. After he left the fill time parish ministry, he worked for ten years as a Steuben County Department of Social Services caseworker in Child Protective and Foster Care.

He learned to play the clarinet in his high school band and it was lifelong avocation for him. He has been a long time member of the Corning Community Concert Band, the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble and the Sunday Night Clarinet Group. He played his last concert for the Corning Band on November 11, 2007.

He served on the Board of Governors of Finger Lakes Conference, Inc., and the Board of Directors of Stewart Park Housing Development in Corning.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Mistretta of Hammondsport; his daughter, Mary Anne Mistretta of Hammondsport; his son, Stephen A. Mistretta of Mechanicsville; grandchildren, Peter Frew of Gouvenor, Dadvid Frew of Pelzer, South Carolina, and KacieBuck of Hammondsport; great- granddaughter, Lezleigh Frew.
