Monroe County man charged in fatal death of a hunter
BY ROB MONTANA GATEHOUSE NEWS SERVICE

ALMOND - Charges have been filed against a Monroe County man in connection with the fatal shooting of a hunter Dec. 1 in Allegany County.

Amity-based state police charged John Gisel, 38, of Webster, Wednesday, Dec. 12, with second-degree manslaughter, a class C felony. He is accused of fatally shooting Brandon Haugh , 30, of Geneseo.

Gisel was arraigned Wednesday in Almond Town Court and released on his own recognizance.

Allegany County District Attorney Terrence Parker said Gisel drove down from Monroe County to turn himself in, exhibiting he's not a flight risk.

The matter has been adjourned until Jan. 14. Almond Justice Paul Johnson said the case is expected to go to the county court system. The case is not expected to be presented to a grand jury until January.

The manslaughter charge stems from the fact it was a reckless act that resulted in the death of an individual, Parker said.

Haugh was struck in the back of the neck by a .30- 06 rifle round at a distance of approximately 85 yards, causing a nearinstant death.

The incident took place while Haugh was hunting with frien d s west of Higgins Hill Road in the Town of Almond, near the Burns town line, around 8:55 a.m. Dec. 1.
