Bringing marble into your home
DAVID MINK GateHouse Plus

Marble has been a fixture of human life since long before our culture arose from the ashes of the American Revolution. As a matter of fact, marble has been used in furniture, art and architecture since the Romans and the Greeks, and even before.

As one of the sturdiest materials around for table-tops, desks and chairs, marble makes a great addition to your home furnishings. Although it's certainly a winner in your kitchen as a countertop or as your dining room table, marble has many other uses, depending on your price range.

A browse through Fine's Gallery (FinesGallery.com) will drum up hundreds of different marble pieces, from the ridiculously ornate (and expensive) to the more budget-oriented. Fine's offers everything from fountains for your garden to statues, memorials, columns, fireplaces, tables, benches, planters, vases, bases, doorways, gazebos, mosaics and balusters. If you're interested in spending your yearly salary, this Web site will easily offer everything you need to create a marble heaven in and around your home.

The marbles come in many different colors, from antique gold calcium to verde serpentino to eretria red. While those may not sound familiar, marble is named according to its natural pattern and veining. Eretria red, for instance, is a white marble with significant gray and red veining and looks as if someone bled on it. Verde serpentino, however, is a green marble with gray veining that looks more like the surface of the moon.

Other sites that offer extensive marble collections include Franoermarmista.com and Marble-Crafts.com.
