CAMPBELL - Campbell- Savona's Kaitlin Smith was held to two points in the second half, but her 21 in the first 16 minutes helped push the Panthers to a 45- 25 SCAA win over Addison Tuesday, Dec. 18.
Smith's opening half gave the Panthers a 28-17 lead at the intermission and the Campbell-Savona defense clamped down to allow just eight Addison points in the second half.
"Phenomenal," Campbell- Savona coach Jeff Allen said of Smith's effort in the opening half. "We talked before the game and I told her to come out and relax and keep your eye on the rim. She's got a good shot."
"That's exactly what she did the first half."
Sarah Warner n tted four of her eight points in the opening 4:38 of the game as Campbell-Savona grabbed a 6- 2 lead.
Addison, which missed on its first six field goal attempts of the game, battled back to tie the score 6-6 as Corissa Hyde sank a pair of baskets. The second came off a nice nolook pass from Bridgette Sutryk, who scored the other two points to open the game.
The Campbell-Savona defense, however, pitched a shutout over the rest of the first quarter, while Smith scored five points during a 6-0 run.
Smith poured in 12 more points in the second quarter to push the Panthers' lead to double digits at the break.
"We had our best defensive player on (Smith) and it didn't do any good," said Addison coach Kim Driskell. "We were also with out Liz Gorges, so that hurt us in the post."
Corrine Wright netted 10 of her 12 points in the second half to lead Campbell-Savona down the stretch.
Addison was led by six points apiece from Hyde and Karissa Flint. Danielle Hill finished with five points.
"We beat ourselves. We had too many errors," Driskell said. "We had too many turn overs and had no ball movement whatsoever."
Campbell-Savona will host Corning East in the opening round of the Campbell-Savona Booster Club Tournament at 7 p.m. Dec. 27. Addison traveled to Arkport for a 7:30 p.m. meeting Friday, Dec. 21.
