Thelma A. Hammond

AVOCA - Thelma A. Hammond, 87, died early Tuesday morning, Jan. 1, at her home at 5360 Michigan Hollow Road, Avoca.

Born in Prattsburgh on March 1, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Roland and Mildred Putnam Lewis. On Sept. 30, 1939 she was married to Clark L. Hammond, who predeceased her on Dec. 11, 1994 after 55 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her daughter, Dixie Kay in 1946 and her grandson, Todd in 1990.

She was employed by the Red & White Store in Avoca and the Ketch Crest Dairy in Bath.

Thelma loved to go antiquing.

Her family includes her son, Richard (Carlene) Hammond of Cleveland, Georgia; her daughter, Bonnie Fires of Rochester; her four grandchildren, Valery, Chad, Cynthia and Chip; her three greatgrandchildren; Bethany, Andrew and Alethia; her brother, Robert (Linda) Lewis of Branchport; her two sisters, Wilma Peacock of Hammondsport and Dorothy Reynolds of Atlanta, Georgia; also her nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were Friday, Jan. 4, from 7-9 p.m. at the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca, where a funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Avoca.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, N.Y. 14830.
