Mitchellsville Road tranquility in jeopardy

To the Editor,

I frequently drive into Bath along the Mitchellsville Road during the week, and it is very pleasant to travel on. The neighborhood, the view of the surrounding hills, and watching Bluegill Farm's cows getting their backs scratched at the revolving brush are all reminders of how much beauty we see every day. Cows are beautiful in their own way.

People who live out this way use the road to walk, jog, run, ride their bikes and the farm equipment travels up and down the road to the different fields. In the summer the travel trailers go up to Hickory Hill, as well as the local residents participating in the special events. For one very special week during the summer, Hickory Hill is host to families of children with disabilities, bringing in trained and experienced staff to work with the children while the family gets some time off.

These farming and recreational establishments contribute to the tourist trade, local economy and picturesque rural character that attracts visitors. These are the types of businesses and experiences we should be encouraging in our community.

In the event that Wal-Mart comes, things will change. People will have a hard time getting out of their driveways, it will be unsafe to ride your bikes, jog, or go for a walk. All this will happen because the Mitchellsville Road will be a bypass for anyone trying to avoid going out Route 54. Think about this.
