Urbana has taken big step forward

Congratulations to the retiring members of the Town of Urbana: Richard Gardiner, Tom Chadwick and John Webster. They have served us admirably during their terms of office.

The acquisition of a public park at Hammondsport lakefront in the name of Glenn H. Curtiss, local pioneer aviator, is a master stroke of forward thinking for our community, for tourism and for posterity. The struggle to obtain the land has been long and hard.

However, the Town of Urbana board members and supporters have clung to their vision of a public park for many years.

The pre-Christmas anonymous donations enabling the purchase to go forward were indeed a stunning gesture of generosity by public spirited individuals.

At this time of serious concern for the future of our planet, saving a few acres of green space for public use is more crucial that ever. We are proud that Hammondsport is leading the way.
