Sports round-up THE LEADER SWAIN - Bath Haverling earned an eighth place finish in Saturday's, Jan. 5, ski race at Swain. The Rams were led by Bob Cilino, who placed 28th with a two-race time of 1:31.16. He was followed by teammates Bryan Smith (39th), Robert Masti (44th) and Chris Spencer (45th). Smith then led the Rams in a one-race slalom with a 40th place finish with a time of 44.02. On Wednesday, Cilino led Bath to a 10th place finish out of 14 teams with a 35th overall finish. Smith was 41st, followed by Ken Gilbert (52nd) and Spencer (54th). Campbell-Savona earns two firsts THE LEADER HAMMONDSPORT - Campbell-Savona placed sixth at Saturday's wrestling tournament held in Hammondsport. Mitchell Janes (103 pounds) and Jake Mastenbrooks (125) earned 5- 0 records to place first in their weight classes. The Panthers also got a third place finish from Josh Simons (152) and fourth place finishes from Tyler Romarki (112) and Andrew McIlwain (215), while Kaleb Drake finished fifth at 189 pounds. Panthers girls basketball team defeats H-port THE LEADER CAMPBELL - Campbell- Savona overcame a 21-10 halftime deficit to defeat Hammondsport 45-31. Trailing the Lakers 27-21 entering the final quarter, the Panthers more than doubled their offense for the game by scoring 24 points in the final eight minutes. "We weren't mentally prepared in the first half," said Campbell-Savona head coach Jeff Allen. "But they came out ready to play in the second half - and they did." Campbell-Savona was led by 16 points from Corrine Wright - including 9-of-10 shooting from the free throw line. Kaitlin Smith added 11 points and blocked five shots. Hammondsport was led by nine points from Kalyn Fries and six apiece from Jen Gordon and Jenna Presley. Panthers rally past Lakers THE LEADER HAMMONDSPORT - Unlike recent seasons, wins haven't come easy for the Campbell-Savona boys basketball team. Wednesday, Jan. 9, was no different. Campbell-Savona battled back from a three-point halftime deficit en route to a 59-48 victory over Hammondsport. May ard Crane led the Panthers with a double-double, netting 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Zach Sutton poured in 14 points, while teammate Camden Wright added 10 for Campbell-Savona. Adam Matula filled up the stat sheet with eight steals, six assists and five points for the Panthers. "We didn't play extremely well in the first half," said Campbell-Savona head coach Merlin Button, "but we came out after the break and had two solid quarters. It was a good, physical, upbeat game." Hammondsport was led by Jake Clarkson's 14 points, including four from long range. Ricci Wendlandt dropped 10, while Will Duncan chipped in with eight. Avoca boys basketball takes 46- 34 win over Arkport THE LEADER ARKPORT - Joe Wallace buried a pair of 3-pointers and erupted for 32 points Wednesday, Jan. 9, to lead the Avoca boys basketball team to a 46-34 win over Arkport. Wallace connected on 13 field goals and was a flawless 4-for-4 from the freethrow line. Teammate Greg Watson also connected twice from long distance and added eight points for the Tigers. Sean Stillman led Arkport (4-6) with 19 points. Avoca (4-7) got off to a slow start and trailed by 10 points after the first quarter, before outscoring Arkport 22- 3 in the second quarter to take control of the game. Campbell undefeated in league play THE LEADER CAMPBELL - Kaitlin Smith scored 16 points and made eight blocks, while Corinne Wright netted 13 points, to keep Campbell- Savona undefeated in league play. Reagen Ryan scored a game-high 17 points for Canisteo-Greenwood. The Panthers (7-4, 5-0) came back from a nearly disastrous third quarter by scoring 19 points in the fourth to rally back from a 13-point deficit against one of the league's top teams. "We're very proud of that," said C-S coach Jeff Allen. "They've been working really hard." Panthers pin Wildcats THE LEADER CAMPBELL - The Campbell-Savona wrestling team won eight out of 13 matches Thursday, Jan. 10, to take down Steuben County foe Jasper- Troupsburg, 45-30. Justin Tombs led the Panthers with a pin in 1:03 to win his 152-pound bout. Jake Masten brook (130) and Josh Simons (160) also won via pin fall, while Kaleb Drake took a 10-3 decision over Josh Peraldo at 189 pounds. The other four Campbell-Savona wins came by way of forfeit. Neiko Lisi led Jasper- Troupsburg with a pin of Devon Paul in 2:49 in the 119-pound bout. Brandon Marlett (135) and Nate Roy (145) also won by pin fall, while the other two Wildcat wins were by forfeit. Rams stun Wayne at O-M Duals THE LEADER ODESSA - Up until the finals, Bath Haverling appeared unstoppable in Saturday's, Jan. 5, Odessa- Montour Duals Tournament, but stateranked Wayne loomed in the championship round. Unbothered by Wayne's ranking, the Rams scored a 48-30 win for the overall championship. Haverling entered Saturday's meet ranked 19th in the state in Class B, while Wayne came in ranked 11th. Those standings should change after Saturday. "We're very, very happy. Anytime you can beat a team like that, ranked 11th in the state, we're happy," said Bath coach Jim Fowler. "We put everything together." In the process, Bath saw five wrestlers go 5-0 on the day, including Kyle Conrad (103 pounds), Mitchell Buckley (112), Sean Dailey (140), Cody Hutcheson (171) and Zack Simons (189). The Rams started the day off by beating Corning District 57- 17, then chewed up Groton 84-6, beat host Odessa- Montour 66-9 and topped Trumansburg 66-18 to reach the finals. The Hawks had two wrestlers go undefeated, Brian Carroll at 215 pounds recorded four pins, and Brian Guilfoyle at 130 pounds also went undefeated with four pins. Kyle Hunt (135), Kyle Bickle (140) and Ben Mackley (160) each went 4-1 for Corning, which only lost two matches - one to Haverling, the other to Wayne. Odessa-Montour's Aaron Linton (145) and Luke Smith (152) also earned outstanding wrestler honors in their weight divisions. Prattsburgh limits Avoca THE LEADER Prattsburgh limited Avoca to single digits in all four quarters, as the Vikings downed the Tigers 36-22 Friday, Jan. 4. Claire Campbell scored half of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to break open a close game, as the Vikings outscored Avoca 13-4 in the final quarter. Campbell also flirted with a tripledouble, hauling in seven rebounds and swiping seven steals. Teammate Megan Wright netted eight points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Jordana Schoolcraft led Prattsburgh with nine boards. Brittany Wheeler contributed with seven points and eight rebounds. Maura Parks led Avoca with seven points, as Brooke Hammonds added six. Bath ski team places eighth at slalom event THE LEADER SWAIN - The Bath Haverling ski team took eighth place out of 14 schools in Wednesday's, Jan. 9, slalom event at Swain Resort. In a field of 143 athletes, Bryan Smith led Bath with a time of 43.70, good enough for 26th place. Teammate Cris Spencer took 43rd (51.27), Ken Gilbert placed 51st (55.47) and Adam Force finished 56th (58.53) as the course took a pounding from the mild weather over the past few days. "The course was basically ice because of the weather conditions," said Bath coach Ron Smith. "There were an awful lot of brown spots and they had to shift the trail a little bit, but the weather is supposed to turn cold and snow is hopefully in the forecast for next week." Bath will return to Swain for an other meet on Wednesday, Jan. 16, as the athletes hope for colder weather and some snowfall. |
