Braves earn first victory in several seasons THE LEADER STAFF BRADFORD - The minutes seemed like hours Tuesday, Jan. 15, inside Bradford's gym. Almost five years of angst was 3.5 minutes away from ending, but the seconds crept by as foul after foul delayed a celebration that hadn't been held in almost eight seasons. With 1.5 minutes left, the Bradford girls basketball team felt confident their losing skid would end and finally the clock ran out for a 33-26 win against Arkport - the school's first in girls hoops since 2001. "We were so anxious, we kept putting them on the line and the clock stopped and I was wondering when that clock was going to run," said Bradford coach Larry Dykes, who has been at the helm of the resurrected program since 2003. "This was a lot of fun. I feel glad for the kids to get the win for them." The Bradford girls team was disbanded after the 2000-01 season and revived in the fall of 2003. Since its return, the program has gone 0-for-82 - until Tuesday. Raeleen Mulaney, a senior who has been a varsity starter since her freshman year, scored a 10-point, 10-rebound doubledouble to lead the Braves (1- 14), while Kate Luta netted seven points, including the team's only 3-pointer. Chelsea Dykes and Sherry O'Dell each chipped in four points and eight rebounds. Arkport was led by Ashley Griffin's gamehigh 11 points. "We hope we're not done yet, we're looking forward to the rest of the season now," Dykes said. Strong third lifts Prattsburgh THE LEADER STAFF PRATTSBURGH - Prattsburgh busted up an 18- 18 halftime tie by outscoring Campbell-Savona 16-5 in the third quarter and went on to earn a 46-33 victory Wednesday, Jan. 16. "The first half, (Campbell- Savona) took us out of what we wanted to do and we kind of just ran around," Burke said. "The third quarter, we scored 16 points and we did a great job on defense. That was the key. Wade Fuller led the Vikings with 14 points, while dishing off seven assists. Garrett Parker chipped in with 11 points. Logan Wheeler chipped in wth six points, but he also pulled down 10 rebounds - which pleased Burke. "Logan just did a great job off the bench," Burke said. "Four of his rebounds were offensive and all of them seemed to come at key moments in the game." Adam Matula was the lone Campbell-Savona player to score in double figures, as he netted 10 points. Maynard Crane added seven. It was the second big contest held in Prattsburgh in the past five days, which Burke believes aided the Vikings Wednesday. "Playing in the environment against Batavia Notre Dame Saturday sure didn't hurt us," Burke said. "It was the same tonight. We had to turn people away, people were sitting on the floor and everyone was screaming. "To me, you can have your big gyms - but they don't have the atmosphere. There's something to be said for having a small gym." 10ths of a second costs Haverling THE LEADER STAFF BATH - In a swim meet decided by fractions of a second, Dansville came out on top with a 161-147 victory Thursday, Jan. 17.
