HAMMONDSPORT - The Bath Relay for Life, headed for its ninth annual fundraiser, will move its venue from the Steuben County Fairgrounds to the Hammondsport volunteer fire department's carnival grounds along state Route 54.

The Relay is scheduled July 11 and 12.

Rita Hoover, event chairperson, said the change will give organizers access to additional space on the Hammondsport school district's adjacent athletic fields. The carnival grounds also contain a track for Relay visitors' Survivor Walk, which begins at 7 p.m. July 11. And maybe best of all: It won't cost the Relay a cent.

"We can have campers with electric services," Hoover said. "We can have bonfires, and it's free."

Organizers also hope the Relay - renamed the Bath- Hammondsport Relay for Life - can attract larger crowds, draw ing from the Hammondsport and Keuka Lake area. Hoover noted the Keuka Lake restaurant Snug Harbor has pledged to provide dinner to Relay visitors at no charge, a hint of the potential advantage of the larger market.

"It was time for a change," Hoover said. "Things get old after a while."

Founded in 2000, the Bath Relay for Life has raised nearly $1 million for cancer research.

The new,Bath- Hammondsport Relay for Life will feature, weather permitting, hot air ballooning, luminaria, planned activities and musical entertainment, Hoover said.
