BY GWEN SHAMBERLAIN GATEHOUSE NEWS SERVICE

PENN YAN - A Penn Yan teacher and former Village Board member who is accused of swindling money from the school district is now facing more serious charges.

Ronald Dailey, 39, of 337 Elm St., was charged Friday by state police with 36 felony counts in relation ot missing funds from the Sheldon Hose Co. of the Penn Yan Fire Department.

"This really wraps up the investigation that has been ongoing for more than six months," said village Mayor Douglas Marchionda Jr.

Dailey is accused of embezzling while he was clerk/treasurer of the Sheldon Hose Co. The exact amount hasn't been made public but Marchionda said it could exceed $30,000.

He faces 30 first-degree counts of falsifying business records, five counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument and a count of third-degree grand larceny.

Dailey was arraigned before Milo Town Justice John Symonds and released on $5,000 cash bail.

Dailey also faces felony charges in connection with about $7,300 missing from the Penn Yan Middle School. That case is being heard in Penn Yan Village Court and has been adjourned until Feb. 25, according to village Justice Danny Hibbard.

Dailey, a tenured seventh-grade socialstudies teacher at the middle school, was suspended with pay in relation to that case.

In late December, he was arrested by village police and charged with third-degree grand larceny and 10 counts of falsifying business records. Those charges stemmed from a complaint from the school district following and audit.

Penn Yan Police Chief Gene Mitchell and Dailey is accused of falsifying 10 payment requests between Nov. 2004 and Dec. 2006.
