Sports schedule THE LEADER BATH - Hornell posted two event wins to finish third and Bath Haverling placed seventh in Saturday's, Feb 2, conference meet. Avon won overall, beating Honeoye Falls-Lima by 71 points. Hornell's Nate Chapman recorded a victory in the 500- yard freestyle by more than three seconds over second place, while the Red Raiders' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Chapman, Brett Maiello, Dontae Mears and Jeff Hanrahan emerged victors. Dan Robinson led Haverling with a third-place finish in the 100-yar individual medley. Josh Loucks place fifth in diving for the Rams, just 93 points off the winning score. Haverling girls basketball team defeats Addison 43-26 THE LEADER BATH - Leah Fuerst poured in 10 points, pulled down five rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals Saturday, Feb. 2, to led Bath Haverling past Addison 43-26. Lakeshia McCloud also put up good numbers for the Rams, grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds to go with her five points and five steals. Bridgette Sutryk buried two 3-pointers and led Addison (7-10) with eight points. P'burgh boys basketball finishes season with 69-30 win against Arkport THE LEADER PRATTSBURGH - Wade Fuller's 16 points, eight assists and seven steals Saturday, Feb. 2, paced Plattsburgh, which closed the regular season with a 69- 30 thumping of Arkport. Garrett Parker chipped in with 12 points and dished out four assists for the Vikings, who earned No. 1 seeds in both the Steuben county tournament and the Section V, Class D playoffs. Plattsburgh's Doug Lewis added eight points, while teammate Phil Maciuska grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. P'burgh advances, clinches top sectional seed THE LEADER STAFF PRATTSBURGH - Not only did top-seeded Prattsburgh advance to the semifinals of the SCAA tournament with a 43-31 win over No. 8 Hammondsport Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Vikings also clinched the No. 1 seed for the Section V, Class D tournament with the win. Doug Lewis topped Plattsburgh (17-1) with 12 points, including a perfect 6- for-6 from the free throw line. Wade fuller netted nine points, dished off seven assists and swiped four steals, while Ryan Caron also dropped nine points. Marshell Stanley controlled the glass for Prattsburgh by ripping down 15 rebounds to go along with his seven points. Stanley also drew the assignment of guarding Hammondsport's leading scorer Jake Clarkson, who was held to just five points. "Stanley did a great defensive job on Clarkson," said Prattsburgh head coach Jim burke. Hammondsport was led by Derek Baroody's 11 points. Bradford earns 59-33 victory over Alfred- Almond in SCAA tournament THE LEADER BRADFORD - Bradford used the strength of a 23- point second quarter to pull away from Alfred-Almond for a 59-33 victory in the consolation bracket of the SCAA tournament Tuesday, Feb. 5. Bradford's Pat Miller netted a game-high 18 points, while Mitchell Kelly dropped 15 points for the Braves. Teammate Steve Ellison added eight and Dylan Blencowe chipped in with seven. Bradford will play its final game of the round-robin tournament at home against No. 9 Avoca at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11. Alfred-Almond defeat Bradford 48-32 in SCAA tournament THE LEADER BRADFORD - Heather Barniak netted a game-high 17 points to help No. 9 Alfred-Almond over No. 11 Bradford 48-32 in the first game of the SCAA consolation tournament. Hannah Hapeman added nine for the Eagles, while Lisa Reynolds and Hannah Porter chipped in with six apiece. Raeleen Mullaney led Bradford with eight points and 11 rebounds. Bradford will play its final game of the round-robin tournament at home at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, against Avoca. Bath Haverling wrestlers get by Corning THE LEADER BATH - In a match with several close decisions and four pins, Bath Haverling got help from two forfeit victories to down the Corning District wrestling team 42-22 Tuesday, Feb. 5. Cody Hutcheson paced Bath with a 1:01 pin of Anthony Nybeck at 171 pounds. Jacob Harrison (125) and Scott Andrews (152) also recorded pins for the Rams, while Brian Hosnoski (96), Nate Uram (145), Zack Simons (189) and Brady Gleason (285) all won close decisions. Corning was led by Brian Carroll's 2:59 pin of Zack Perkins in the 215-pound match, while teammate Kyle Bickle recorded the match's only major decision with a 12-3 win over Matt Schrintz at 140 pounds, Chris Wood (119), Brian Guileful (130), Anthony Fogarty (135) and Ben Mackley (160) all recorded decisions for Corning. "They had three pins to our one and the forfeits made a big difference," said Corning coach John Wolcox. Campbell-Savona is defeated by Watkins Glen THE LEADER SAVONA - Despite winning all four matches that were wrestled Tuesday, Feb. 5, Campbell-Savona wound up losing its match with Watkins Glen 54-27 by virtue of eight forfeits. Josh Simons led Campbell- Savona with a 1:22 pin of Sam Ventra at the 152-pound class, leading the Panthers to an undefeated day in matches that were actually wrestled. Tyler Romanki (112) and Devon Paul (119) also recorded pins for Campbell-Savona while Mitchell James (103) took a 9-4 decision over Dustin Cummings. "My guys know how to wrestle and they did very well tonight," said Campbell- Savona coach Dom Scolaro. "We have four guys injured and that really takes a nick out of a small team." Vikings hold off Panthers THE LEADER PRATTSBURGH - Claire Campbell scored a game-high 14 points and Lindsay Parker knocked down a game-clinching bucket in teh forth quarter to give No. 4 Prattsburgh a 37-33 quarterfinal win against fifth-seeded Campbell-Savona in the Steuben County Athletic Association girls basketball tournament. Campbell made five steals and pulled down four rebounds, while Jordana Schoolcraft chipped in eight points and ripped down 13 rebounds for the Vikings (11- 6), while the Panthers were led by Kaitlin Smith scored a team-high 10 points and Sarah Warner netted eight to fuel Campbell-Savona's (9-9) attack. "It was tight all the way through," said Prattsburgh coach Robert Mills. "It was two very evenly-matched teams." Early in the third quarter, Campbell-Savona had Prattsburgh down by seven points, but with two of the Panthers' high scorers on the bench with foul trouble, the Vikings surged ahead by one point at quarter's end. Hammondsport gets defeated by Canaseraga THE LEADER CANASERAGA - The duo of Kristen Moose and Patty Capwell helped lead No. 3 Canaseraga over sixth-seeded Hammondsport 43-25 Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the quarterfinals of the SCAA tournament. Moose led all scorers with 17 points, including the game's only 3-pointer. Capwell netted 16, while Canaseraga (11-7) controlled the glass for most of the game. Stephanie New led the Indians with 13 rebounds, Darcie Smith grabbed 10 and Amber Oliver hauled in eight boards. "The girls are coming along very well," said Canaseraga head coach Les York. "They did a good job of controlling the boards tonight. Anyone can beat anyone in this tournament and you've got to be on top of our game to advance." Alfred-Almond takes control of SCAA swim meet THE LEADER CAMPBELL - After going undefeated in league meets this season, Alfred- Almond took control of Wednesday's, Feb. 6, SCAA meet at Campbell-Savona by amasing 552 total points over four other schools. Tyler Harvey led the way for the Eagles by winning all four of his events, while earning the boys' top swimmer award. Harvey won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.01 and the 100 butterfly in 1:02.39. Tyler also was on two relay teams that placed first, the 200 freestyle relay (1.38.55) with Steve Kovalcik, Gary Chester and Eric Goodrich and the 400 freestyle relay (3:47.23) with Chester, John Cormack and Kalem Chambliss. Chester also won the 200 frestyle in 2:02.71 to become a triple winner, while Kovalcik took first in the 100 backstroke (1:03.36) to earn two victories. Brendan Riley was a part of both Cuba- Rushford's wins, as he won the 50 freestyle in 24.01 and led the 200 medley relay team with David Dye, Mike Kenyon and Dave LaPiere to a 1:53.90 finish. Campbell-Savona, Canisteo-Greenwood and Addison all collected a win apiece. Drew Teter led the Panthers with a win in the 100 freestyle (53.64), Derek Brown paced the Redskins with a win in the 500 freestyle (5:58.58) and Dan Carr won the 100 breastroke (1:09.23) for the Knights. Maddie Gleil won the girls' swimmer of the meet award, as she added to Alfred-Almond's accomplishments. Free-throws life Bath THE LEADER WARSAW - Leah Fuerst did not connect once from the field, but was still the Bath Haverling girls basketball team's top scorer in the Rams' 42-30 victory over Warsaw Thursday, Feb. 7. All of Fuerst's team-high 11 points came on 11-of-16 shooting from the freethrow line. Fuerst also led Bath with three assists, pulled down five rebounds and recorded three steals. In fact, Bath scored more than half of its points from the line, going 22-for-39 at the charity stripe. The Rams rallied from a five-point deficit at halftime and still trailed by three after the third quarter, but outscored Warsaw 20-6 in the final quarter. Lakeshia McCloud chipped in with six points and posted team-high in rebounds (9) and steals (7). Rachel Oest also scored six points for the Rams. "We came out real flat and shot about as poorly as possible," Bath head coach Randy Abrams said of his team,which shot just 2-of-35 from the field in the first half and produced just 12 points. "I told the girls coming in that our game plan was to press and run and hope that they owuld wear down later in the game. That worked out pretty much perfectly as we outscored them 20-6 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win." Bath (10-9, 3-7) will play at York on Monday, Feb. 11. Wallace paces Avoca THE LEADER ALMOND - Joe Wallace's 18 points paced Avoca in a 52-38 win over Alfred- Almond Thursday, Feb. 7, in a Steuben County consolation bracket game. Steve Olds poured in nine points for the Tigers, who jumped out to a 28- 15 lead at halftime and never looked back. Hammondsport defeats Arkport 27- 18 THE LEADER HAMMONDSPORT - Nick Foster, Joe Landon and Joe Bussman each picked up key wins, Thursday, Feb. 7, to lead Hammondsport to a 27-18 victory over Arkport. Foster used a 19-3 technical fall to win his 130- pound bout against Josh Spoth. Bussman scored a 11-0 major decision to take his 160-pound match, while Landon pinned Matt Getman in 4:36 to prevail 140. Arkport's lone non-forfeit win came from Nate Gambino, who scored a pin in just 40 seconds to win at 152. Notre Dame defeats Campbell-Savona THE LEADER CAMPBELL - Wins from Tom Cerio and Matt Roy fueled Elmira Notre Dame against Campbell-Savona. A total of only three matches were not decided by forfeit. Cerio won his 152-pound bout with a pin, while Roy used a decision to p revail at 160. Campbell-Savona's Devon Paul won his 125-pound match with a pin in 2:33. Haverling ski team ranks ninth THE LEADER GROVE - With only one run in the giant slalom due to sloppy conditions, Bath Haverling ranked ninth amoung 15 teams Wednesday, Feb. 6. Senior Bryan Smith led the way for the Rams with a time of 49.72, which ranked 39th overall. Bath's Bob Cilino ranked 10th (49.77), Chris Spence was 49th (53.42) and Adam Force notched 53rd. |
