BATH - If you live in the Southern Tier and love the game of golf, two important events occur in the month of April.
Crocuses bloom, with the promise of fresh, green golf courses opening soon.
And the Augusta National Golf Club hosts The Masters.
The first of the great annual major tournaments begins this year on April 10, as 50 of the world's greatest golf professionals tee off on the first day of the four-day tournament.
And if you love golf, you'd love to be there.
But there are challenges. Tickets are scarce, and this year's Masters reportedly already is sold out. Then there's the issue of cost. A single ticket for the third and fourth days of the Masters cost more than $3,000.
So, for most of us, attending The Masters isn't a spur-of-the moment decision. And for many of us, it can only be a dream.
But Arc of Steuben has found a way of putting that dream within reach. The organization is offering area residents a unique opportunity to attend one of sports' great events through a raffle with a great first-prize package: two tickets for the opening day of The Masters in addition to transportation to and from the tournament via private jet.
Tickets are $100 a piece, and only 300 tickets will be sold.
Proceeds from the raffle will go toward Arc's capital campaign to finance construction of a $4.5 million office building. Groundbreaking for the project is scheduled for early March. Golf lovers can buy a chance to visit their own special Mecca and also support the growth of the worthy local organization.
There are other prizes, too: The second-place award is $1,000; third-place is a golf package with $500 worth of merchandise. Prizes will be drawn on March 19 at the Bath Country Club.
