Five to be inducted into county Hall of Fame

BATH - A local civil rights pioneer and a well-known folk singer are among the five Steuben County residents set for induction into the county Hall of Fame in late April.

The late Charles R. McGrady and Mary Lu Walker, both of

Corning, are among the Hall of Fame nominees approved

by the county Legislature.

Other inductees include Otis Bullard, of Howard; Lucy M. Maltby, of Corning and Marion Springer, of Bath.

A Steuben County employee for 34 years, Springer volunteered in the county Historian's Office for 20 years. Her efforts are responsible for the office's extensive research documents, vital statistics and archives. She died in 2006, at the age of 82.

McGrady was known for his work toward racial equality in the area, and particularly at the Cornin g Glass Works and Corning Inc. He served as the firm's community relations director from 1968-87. He died in 1999.

A sports standout in high school, McGrady served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was part of the invasion

on Normandy Beach and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He also was a part of the Allied forces liberation of the Dachau concentration camp in Germany.

Walker, 82, is an internationally known folk singer and songwriter, performing in children's educational program in Ukraine, Australia and the Fiji Islands.

Many of her songs are included in hymnals used in church services across the world.
