'Cinderella' is No. 30 for Haverling

BATH - Thirty years ago, the Haverling school district hosted its first senior musical, "Gus and Dolls," directed by the senior students themselves.

The tradition continues this week with the production "Cinderella," which opens at 7 p.m. April 4 in the high school auditorium. Performances have also been scheduled for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 5.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens (age 60 and above) and $5 for students and are available from any cast member, the high school office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or at the door.

Composed by Rodgers and Hammerstein, "Cinderella is the musical retelling of the classic fairy tale. Cinderella is a teenage girl forced to do all of the menial tasks in the home she shares with her coldhearted stepmother and homely stepsisters. The king and queen invite every young maiden in the kingdom to a royal ball in celebration of their son's birthday so that the crown prince can find a girl to marry. Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters go to the ball, leaving Cinderella behind to wish about how her life could be. While she is daydreaming, she is visited by her fairy godmother, who makes it possible for her wishes to come true.

The 30th musical production follows a rich history of musical theater at Haverling school district. Since "Gus and Dolls," musical have included: "Li'l Abner," "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," "Music Man," "Wizard of Oz," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Peter Pan," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Pippin," "Anything Goes," "Camelot," "Company," "Hello, Dolly!" "Kiss Me, Kate," My Fair Lady," "Brigadoon," Damn Yankees," "Pajama Game," "Bye Bye Birdie," "Sound of Music," Into the Woods," "South Pacific," "Grease," "Pirates of Penzance," Annie Get Your Gun," "West Side Story," Oklahoma," Mame" and "Carousel."
