Bath resident charged after chase in Erwin ERWIN - A Bath man wanted for a parole violation led police on a highspeed chase Thursday, March 27, afternoon on state Route 15, then fled a half-mile into the woods on foot before he was caught. According to state police, based at Painted Post, Christian P. Riley, 22, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and firstdegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, both felonies. He was also charged with driving while intoxicated by drugs and thirddegree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, both misdemeanors, as well as numerous vehicle and traffic infractions. At approximately 4:30 p.m., state troopers attempted to pull over a vehicle that was headed northbound of Route 15 in the town of Erwin. They believed the vehicle was driven by Riley, who was wanted on a parole violation, police said. Riley allegedly led police on a chase that lasted approximately one minute but reached speeds of 110 miles per hour, according to scanner reports. Authorities were in the process of setting up spikes in the highway to stop the vehicle, according to scanner reports, but Riley pulled into the Erwin rest area and fled into the woods. Troopers pursued Riley on foot for about a halfmile before he was apprehended and taken into custody authorities said. State police were assisted during the incident by the state Division of Parole, along with corning and Painted Post police. Riley was turned over to the state Division of Parole and will be arraigned in Erwin Town Court at a later date. |
