Local sports round-up HAMMONDSPORT - After earning 10 hits in a win over Alfred-Almond Monday, April 7, Hammondsport belted 17 more hits Tuesday, April 8, for a 15-3 win over Bradford.
Derek Baroody got the win against the Eagles and Steve Stopka picked up the victory over the Braves. Brian Stachnik paced the Lakers at the plate with a double and three RBI's Monday, while teammate Ricci Wendlandt drove in two runs. Will Bailey highlighted the offensive onslaught Tuesday with a triple, as Wendlandt came through with a double. CAMPBELL - Corning West had no shortage of offense or defense, as the Vikings pounded out 15 hits and two pitcher combined to throw a one-hitter in a 16-0 shutout over Campbell- Savona. Holly Frampton led the Vikings with a 5-for-5 day from the plate, including a double, a triple and three RBI's. The duo of Kolleene Simmons and Quincy Lewis was equally as impressive on the mound, as the two hurlers combined to pitch six innings and only allowed one hit.
Lewis also went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Meghan Zoerb and Jordan Pierri each went 2-for-5 and Pierri added a three-bagger. HAMMONDSPORT - Hammondsport scored at least one run in four innings to win its first game of the season over Bradford 5-0. Audrey Shippee went the distance on the mound for the Lakers, giving up just three hits in seven innings of work. Kelly Walling went 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases for Hammondsport, while teammate Taylor Wade roped two doubles and also scored two runs.
Bradford's Autumn Stone picked up the loss, while Courtney Sutryk picked up the only extra-base hit for the Braves with a triple. AVOCA - Joe Wallace threw 85 pitches in a complete-game effort, striking out 10, to help Avoca snap a two-game slide with a 7-2 victory against Prattsburgh on Wednesday, April 9. Fred Klock led the Tigers at the plate, finishing 2-for-3. Matt Armstrong went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI and Brian Kidder ended up 1-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
For Prattsburgh, Jake Zurlick went 2-for-3 and Elijah Hicks recorded a 1-for-3 day at the plate with one run scored. Cody Gray worked five innings on the hill, striking out three while giving up five runs. AVOCA - Avoca put up eight runs in the first inning and handed the game over to the defense, as the Tigers rolled to a 15-0 shutout over Prattsburgh Wednesday, April 9. Sara Becker took over the game for the start and only got better on the mound with a comfortable lead. Becker recorded 12 strikeouts, while walking two and only allowing one hit for the complete game shutout.
Becker also faired well at the plate with two doubles and two RBI's, while teammates Kelsey McRae and Brooke Hammond knocked in two runs each. ARKPORT - Brooke Lovell remained unbeaten in the first week of Arkport's season after the Blue Jays took a 5-2 win from Bradford Wednesday, April 9. Lovell not only struck out 12 Braves on the mound, she also pitched in with a solo homer to propel the Blue Jays to victory.
Bradford's Chelsea Houck led the Braves with a double as part of her 4-for-4 day from the plate, including Bradford's only two RBI's. HAMMONDSPORT - Campbell-Savona remained perfect in SCAA play with a 9-4 win over Hammondsport Wednesday, April 9 on the road. Cici Failing pitched a complete game to record her second win of the season, while Amanda Mehlenbacher provided a sturdy backstop. Brittani Knowles led the Panthers with a 3-for-4 day, including an RBI. Teammate Samantha Cleveland hit the only extra-base hit of the game with a triple, while Corinne Wright went 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs.
Audrey Shippee went the distance for Hammondsport, but came away with her second loss of the season. PENN YAN - Penn Yan was rock solid on both sides of the ball and scored at least one run in each of the first four innings to take an 11-0 shutout over Bath Haverling Tuesday, April 8.
Bath Haverling was blanked in all six frames and was unable to come away with a hit against Penn Yan's Amanda Mosich her threw the no-hitter. WELLSVILLE - After posting just a pair of singles in their opener against Allegany- Limestone Tuesday, April 8, Wellsville broke out the heavy metal against visiting Bath, pounding three different pitchers for nine extra-base hits and 17 altogether in an 18-3 win over Bath. Tigers receive first win of season GATEHOUSE MEDIA ADDISON - Addison swept doubles play, but Avoca took command in singles to come away with a win. Micah Fish-Gertz, Kent Lester and Randel Rice all won in singles for Avoca, giving the Tigers their first victory of the season. With Fish-Gertz taking the upper hand, 7-6(7-5), 7-6(7-4), Dan Carr had no reason to hang his head. After singles, Addison came back and won both doubles matches. Caleb Bevis and Josh Goodrich won first singles, while the team of Matt + Kahabka and Logan Pallmann took a victory at second doubles. H'port boys gains 4-1 win over C-S GATEHOUSE MEDIA HAMMONDSPORT - Hammondsport won every match, except second singles and moved above the .500 mark in a 4-1 win over Campbell- Savona Thursday, April 10. Chris Haluszczak and Josh Malone led Hammondsport (4- 3) with singles wins, while the doubles teams went perfect for the Lakers. Josh Simons picked up the lone win for Campbell-Savona at second singles. H'port girls track gains 88-37 win over C-S GATEHOUSE MEDIA HAMMONDSPORT - The Hammondsport girls seemed to like their new track, as the Lakers came away with a 88-37 win over Campbell-Savona. Brooke Gordon led the Lakers with two wins, one in the 100 meter hurdles (18.2) and one in the 800 (2:42.3). Sylvia Sable also picked up two individual wins, the 1500 (5:53.6) and the discus (66-5), while sharing a win in the 3200 relay team's win in 12:04.4. Rams get 13-point victory GATEHOUSE MEDIA BATAVIA - Bath Haverling controlled the field from the opening faceoff, limiting Batavia to just 16 shots in a 14- 1 win Thursday, April 10. Bath (3-1) came out on fire, peppering Batavia's net with eight goals on 28 shots in the first half, while Batavia was scoreless on just five shots. "We controlled the entire first half," said Bath head coach Ken DiDomineck. "The ground balls were fairly even, but we did an excellent job after controlli g the ball and made good decisions with it." Dave Harris led the Bath's potent offense with five goals, while teammate McKenzie Durham netting three goals and dished off three assists. Matt Nesbitt and Nick Rossi tallied two goals apiece for the Rams. "We really turned it around from our loss to Livonia," added DiDomineck. "We're a pretty young team, but we're learning on the run. It was nice to see four quarters of great lacrosse." Out of Batavia's 16 shots, Bath goalie Chris Wolfer stopped 6 shots and teammate T.J. Smalt came into stop two shots for the Rams. Joe Muoio scored Batavia's lone goal, while Kyle Maniace assisted. Bath has no games scheduled over spring break and will return to action for its home opener against McQuaid April 22. C-S softball deveats A-A GATEHOUS MEDIA CAMPBELL - Campbell- Savona, behind starting pitcher Cici Failing, shut down Alfred-Almond's offense and remained perfect in the SCAA with a 3-0 win Thursday, April 10. Failing (3-1) tossed the complete game one-hitter for the shutout, while Sarah Warner and Kayla Wagner each drove in a run for the Panthers. Alfred-Almond's Hannah Porter picked up the loss for Alfred-Almond. Haverling takes down GATEHOUSE MEDIA DANSVILLE - Bath Haverling put up runs in four out of the first five innings and pounded out 12 hits to take down Dansville 12-5 in both team's season opener. Mike Rossi paced the Rams with a 2-for-4 day from the plate, including a home run and three RBI's, all while throwing five innings and only giving up three runs to get the win. Teammates Brett Havens, Brad York, Montana Yastremski and Matt Whedbee all went 2-for-3 on the day. Yastremski's two hits were a double and a homer, while York smacked a twobagger and a triple. "It was just good to get outside and I was real pleased with our at-bats," said Bath head coach Bob Buckley. "It's good to get the season underway with a win." Dansville was led by Tyler Coch's double and Jake Lawrence's RBI. Panthers rally past Eagles GATEHOUSE MEDIA CAMPBELL - After trailing by four runs in the fifth inning, Campbell-Savona put on a late rally to edge Alfred- Almon d 5-4 Thursday, April 10. Alfred-Almond (2-2) scored two runs in the first inning to gain an early cushion and pushed two more runs across in the top of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Campbell-Savona got the bats working in the bottom of the fifth and used the help of a few passed balls and wild pitches. After forcing Eagles' starter Tyler Bossard from the game, Campbell-Savona tied the game at 4-4 after five. That set the stage for the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Steve Wray led off with a single for the Panthers and was bunted over to second base. After a walk to put runners on first and second, Zach Sutton roped a double up the middle that bounced off the bag and ricocheted into right field, scoring Wray with the gamewinner. Alex Caward went the distance on the mound for the Panthers and only allowed two earned runs, while striking out six and walking two batters. Caward also helped his own cause with by scoring a run and driving in another. Joe York went 2-for- 3 for the Panthers and accounted for the tying run. Ethan Mix and Robert Comer picked up the only two RBIs for the Eagles. Tigers defeat Braves 9-2 GATEHOUSE MEDIA BRADFORD - Bradford hung tough for most of the game, but Avoca closed the door with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, as the Tigers beat the Braves 9- 2 Thursday, April 10. Brian Kidder led Avoca's offense with two triples, while Joe Wallace knocked in two RBIs. Ryan Dykes pitched well for Bradford, but the Braves could not overcome their six errors in the field. Bradford will have the week off for spring break and will return to action April 15 at home against Prattsburgh. Haverling gains 13-3 win over Waterloo GATEHOUSE MEDIA BATH - Bath Haverling pounded out 13 runs on 11 hits in its win over Waterloo Thursday, April 10. Billy Crowe led the Rams with a 3-for-4 game, which included a triple and three runs batted in. Teammates Mike Rossi, Montana Yastremski and Karl VanAmburg all recorded two hits each. Chris Leonard struck out seven in four innings of work. He scattered two hits and allowed one run. C'bell softball gains win against C-G GATEHOUSE MEIDA CAMPBELL - It took four innings for the offense to start clicking, but Campbell- Savona staved off a late Canisteo-Greenwood rally to win 4-3 Monday, April 7. Samantha Cleveland paced the Panthers at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 day, while Cici Failing improved to 1-1 on the season by pitching the complete game, three-hitter. Brooke Knowles, Brittani Knowles and Corinne Wright all recorded doubles, as Brittani Knowles Wright and Kayla Wagner each knocked in a run. "We simply got the hits when we needed them," said Campbell-Savona head coach Joanie Mokowiec. Amanda Prouty knocked in two runs to go along with her double and a strong day behind the plate for Canisteo-Greenwood. Avoca softball takes down Bradford 10-5 GATEHOUSE MEDIA BRADFORD - Avoca pounded out 17 hits Thursday, April 10, as the Tigers won a key early-season game to stay with the leaders in the SCAA. Sara Becker, who pitched her second victory of the season, went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles while Ali Cagle went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Kelsey McRae went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Brooke Hammond was 2-for-4 for the Tigers (2- 1). Bradford was led by Raeleen Mullaney's 3-for-4 performance at the plate which netted three doubles and an RBI. P'burgh softball gains first game of the season GATEHOUSE MEDIA PRATTSBURGH - Prattsburgh got offensive in its first win of the season, stopping Webster Christian in five innings 15-0. Claire Campbell went 3- for-4 with a triple and four runs batted into lead the Vikings. Tricia Wallace and Britt Wheeler added two hits and three RBI apiece. Beth Bentley scattered two hits and struck out 11 on the mound. Waterloo gains 18-0 victory over Haverling GATEHOUSE MEDIA BATH - Waterloo's bats put the ball in play and took advantage of 12 Bath errors in a 18-0, no-hit shutout over the Rams Thursday, April 10. Waterloo's Jen Durso threw a no-hitter in the five inning affair, while teammate Kate Black socked a triple. Bath (0-4) went through three pitchers on the day and Waterloo scored in all five innings. The Rams will have their spring break week off and will return to action when Bath hosts Livonia April 21. H'port softball defeated by Addison 10-0 GATEHOUSE MEDIA ADDISON - The Knights got their bats going and rebounded from their season -opening loss to Canisteo- Greenwood on Wednesday, April 9, with a 10-0 shutout over Hammondsport Thursday, April 10. Addison's Liz Gorges did her job in the clean-up spot by going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Teammate Alexa Soporowski went 2-for-3 with a double, while Danielle Hill also smacked a two-bagger and drove in three runs. In addition to the offensive awakening, Nicole Sutryk dominated on the mound for Addison with nine strikeouts and only one walk for a complete game two-hitter. Sutryk also had a good day with the bat, as she went 2-for-4. Hammondsport's Taylor Wade had the only extrabase hit for the Lakers with a double. |
