HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS • The Hammondsport Bostwick Club met on Saturday, April 19. The committee members were Brian and Jill Flynn, Sam and Millie Barkley, Clyde and Lillian Elwood, Richard and Janet McCandless, and Ed and Ann Vought. In charge of entertainment were Gary and Sharon Utter. • Next weekend, April 25- 27, the Hammondsport Centraol School Drama Club will proudly present The Hound of the Baskervilles, adapted by Tim Kelly from the story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The original tale concerns the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Doctor Watson, who try to end the curse on the male heirs of the Baskerville family. Each is doomed to die an untimely death from the attack of a savage hound on the moors of England. The play will be performed in the Hammondsport Main Street School Auditorium on Friday evening, April 25, Saturday evening April 26, and Sunday afternoon, April 27. The director is Mrs. Carol Olszewski, drama club advisor. • If you had been visiting the Primary School one day in February, you might have caught sight of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, or Teddy Roosevelt roaming the halls! These past presidents might have seemed a little bit shorter than you remember from your history book. That's because they were grades K-3 students dressed up as their favorite president in honor of President's Day. In addition, students participated in a presidential essay contest. To enter, students wrote a 100- word essay identifying and explaining the most important qualities that a person running for President of the United States should possess. Prizes were awarded for the best presidential costumes and best essay at each grade level. Winners for best costume: Kindergarten: Madison Wright, Washington, and Charles Hill, Lincoln; First Grade: Noah Wilkinson, Wilson, and Jonah Wilkinson, Roosevelt; Second Grade: Jackson Cummings, Bush, and Kelsey Hoyt, Lincoln; Third Grade: Paige Faucett, Washington. Essay winners were Julia Bennett, Kindergarten; Colin Drain, First Grade; Robin Jenkins, Second Grade; and Nicholas Bennett, Third Grade. • Thanks to all who have donated funds for the Hammondsport Community Services. In a recent column, Cricket described a very interesting project underway that has resulted in Cricket "seeing more of Steuben County than most of my two-legged friends. If the truth be known, I've seen more of our beautiful county than most of its residents - human or otherwise. I have been on back roads, seasonal road, farm lanes, cow paths, and wild animal trails. As most of you know by now, my mom and I are looking for cemeteries. As I write this, we have located and mapped cemeteries in 22 of the 32 towns in the county. This summer we hope to do the same in the remaining towns of Addison, Cameron, Caton, Jasper, Lindley, Rathbone, Troupsburg, Tuscarora, Wayne, and Woodhull. Meanwhile, I will rest up and dream of tombstone picnics while I await the summer's adventures." So residents of any of those 10 towns - if you know of local cemeteries for Cricket to map, contact the Steuben County Historical Society.
