• Do you know that Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868, by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic? It was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize Memorial Day was New York State! Today Memorial Day is always observed on a Monday (May 26 this year) so it ALWAYS creates a long weekend.

• If you love great moments in baseball, there is one coming up on Friday, May 23. In 1926, 82 years ago, Hank Wilson of the Chicago Cubs became the first player to hit a home run off the scoreboard in Wrigley Field. At the time the scoreboard was on the ground level. In 1937, it moved above the bleachers. Young baseball and softball players, that's something to try for - and how to really score for your team!

• Thanks come from the Hammondsport Central School's Transportation Department and Cindy Tollerup, transportation supervisor, to all parents for their patience and cooperation on many a very icy morning this winter and spring. Tollerup says, "We have never had a year with so much ice making many delays as we had this school year. A special thanks also goes to all the road crews who tried to stay ahead of our buses, backed up the hills to get us going ahead, and listened to our radio transmissions for our location when we needed them. You guys are super and we appreciate all of your efforts."

• A senior at Hammondsport Central School recently won the Future Business Leaders of America, District #11, Impromptu Speaking Contest. The winner, Gavin Goodman, went on to represent District 11 at the Nevele Grand Hotel in Ellenville, New York. The impromptu speaking contest requires contestants to give a four-minute speech on a topic related to FBLA goals and current activities. After the contestant is given the topic, he/she is allowed four minutes to make notes and prepare the speech to appear before the judges. Speeches are judged on content, delivery, and adherence to the time restrictions. Gavin's topic at the district level was Leadership in Action. He used his FBLA chapter's involvement with the Hammondsport downtown merchants as a focus of his speech. Gavin placed in the top 8 out of 40 contestants in the 2007 FBLA contest.

• Hammondsport Central School doesn't just have special junior and senior fun affairs for their teens. Just see what they also do for the younger students! • Trafford Doherty, director

+ of the Curtiss Museum,

must be happy that it is well into May! In the spring Aerogram for members, he spoke about the tremendous

volunteer effort during the cold winter months in the Restoration Shop AND other volunteers who soldiered on through the cold winter months to assist the museum. He recalled seeing Jeanette Feil huddled under quilts next to an electric heater, cataloging library books, and Wilma Poehlein at the front desk with a heater. "Leaving warm homes to come here where it is NOT warm to show off the museum to our visitors ... we enjoy an amazing level of dedication from our volunteers, especially during those cold cold months," Doherty said.
