HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS

.• Roswell McDaniels Post #407 of the American Legion Memorial Day observance tomorrow includes an 8:30 a.m. servi ceat Mitchellville Cemetery and 9 a.m. services at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. There is a 10 a.m. parade in Hammondsport, starting from Curtiss School. All organizations and community groups wanting to take part in the parade are welcome to march down Main Street, ending at Elmwood Cemetery. At the ceremonies there, guest speaker will be an Iraq veteran, J. P. Oliver. A small luncheon follows at the Roswell McDaniels Post #407, Route 54 in Hammondsport, sa ys Commander James Stone. In Pulteney, observances begin with a 12 p.m. parade that starts at Stone Road Intersection with County Route 74. The parade will end at Glenview Cemetery, where services will take place. The public is encouraged to come to decorate graves and walk or ride their bikes in the parade.

• Hammondsport Central School is closed tomorrow, May 26, for the celebration of Memorial Day. High School Awards Day will be Friday, May 30. Contact the school for more information.

• The 11th Annual Potted Perennial Plant Exchange plus garden tips, offered by the Peace and Justice Group of Bath and Hammondsport, takes place tomorrow May 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Moretti's stone house, 8323 Pleasant Valley Road in Hammondsport, No money is involved. Just bring a POTTED and LABELED plant to exchange with another plant lover. More information? Call 569- 3564.

• Hammondsport Central School faculty, parents, teachers, and community will all be missing longtime superintendent Christopher Brown, whose last day in Hammondsport is June 30. Superintendent Brown and his family are moving to Syracuse, his hometown, where he has accepted the position of superintendent in the West Genesee School District. Brown says, "There are many factors that led to this decision, but the largest reason was to return home to be closer to family."

• Dustin Deal and Ryan Eckel, both Hammondsport Central School seventhgrade students, recently attended a People-to-People World Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. The young men and others attending from all over the world toured Capitol Hill, the Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Arlington National Cemetery, the Mall of National Monuments and Memorials, and other important sites in our nation's capital. They also went for a day to Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg, plus another day was spent at Gettysburg National Military Park. The young men learned with others about leadership, plus how great leaders throughout history have handled world events. There were also various hands-on activities, professional speakers, and workshops presented. Deal and Eckel were introduced to the essential need for informed and passionate world leaders. Congratulations to the local students for this great opportunity!

• The Primary Physical Education Department is still looking for more roller skates and rollerblades to have on hand for the roller skating segment of physical education classes. So many of the school's skates and blades are very old or broken. The school appreciates those already donated and hope others may be dropped off at the Primary Office. Thanks to all who donate!

• Wednesday, June 4, is the 4th Annual Peace Banquet to honor the 2008 recipients of Helen Rubar Memorial Peace Scholarship: Hannah Catherman, Stacie Draper, Amanda Secondo and Jessica Sokolowski from Hammondsport and Haverling High Schools. This is the 10th year the scholarship is being given, which is co-sponsored by the Peace and Justice Group as well as the PeaceWeavers. The banquet starts at 7 p.m at Thunder Mountain Retreat Sanctuary, 8125 Crouse Road, Bath, with a festive Mexican dinner. Tickets are $15 for adults; and $5 for kids 17 and under. Please make your reservations by Friday, May 30, by calling 776-4060. All proceeds benefit the Helen Rubar Memorial Scholarship Fund, and donations are welcome.

• The very important and exciting Junebug Centennial Dinner at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the flight of the Junebug in 1908. The dinner will be on Friday, July 4, starting at 6 p.m. with drinks and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a buffet dinner catered by Around the Corner Catering. After dinner, there will be entertainment by The Hep Cats. Honored guests attending will be Tom Crouch, senior curator of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and Louis Casey, author of Curtiss: The Hammondsport Era, 1907- 1915. • St. Gabriel's Catholic: Maureen O'Neill, Pastoral Administrator. Mass Schedule: Saturdays 5:30 p.m., Sundays 11 a.m.;

Communion Service, Monday - Thursday at 8 a.m.; Mass on Fridays at 8 a.m.

St. Gabriel's will have a Sunday 8 a.m. mass on May 25. St. Gabriel's also will have an 8 a.m. mass for the entire month of June, thanks to help from our dioceses. They have been able to schedule Father Dan Condon as our visiting Sacramental Minister. Father Jim Jaeger begins his service as our Sacramental Minister at the end of June.

St. Gabriel's will have a fall class for Confirmation. If any adults are interested, either for themselves or for their children, please contact the parish office by May 31. This sacrament is readiness-based. Young people must be baptized and have celebrated their first communion.

There will be a parish yard sale on Saturday, June 7, the same day as the village yard sales. St. Gabriel's yard sale will be a fund-raiser for the parish. Please help with donations of gently used items in good condition: clothing (children and adult), toys, books, small kitchen and other such appliances, furniture and other items usually sold at a garage sale. (Here is the perfect reason to get your spring cleaning down now!) Volunteers are needed to help sort, price, and sell the materials. Please sign up at the back table. The Youth Group meets at 7 p.m. on May 26 at McGill Hall.

Next Sunday, June 1, the parish will host a breakfast for our graduating seniors. Invitations have gone to the five high school seniors of our faith.

The Bath Knights of Columbus scholarship is being awarded to one senior from each of these local parishes: St.Gabriel's, St, Mary's, and St. Stansislaus. Applications were sent to the five graduates from St. Gabriel's. If there are any other young people in our parish graduating from high school this year, please contact the parish office right away. We would like to invite you to the June breakfast and give you a scholarship application. Completed applications are due to the parish office on Sunday, June 1.

• St. James Episcopal: Located on the corner of Main and Lake Streets. The Rev. Sandra Curtis, Rector; Sunday Eucharist and Sunday School are at 9 a.m., followed by Coffee Hour. Thursday at 12:15 p.m., Holy Eucharist; Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is open on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m.

On Monday, May 26, Al-Anon meeting at the church at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, May 31, there will be a consecration of the Rev. Dr. Prince Singh as the Bishop of Rochester.

First United Methodist Church: The Rev. Paul Rowley, Minister: 8:30 a.m. Service: 9:45-10:45 a.m., Sunday School; 11 a.m. Service. On the 5th Sunday of the month, the two services are combined with a 10 a.m. service for all.

• The First Presbyterian Churches of Hammondsport and Pulteney: Interim Pastor Anne Waasdorp at both churches: Pulteney at 9:30 a.m.; Hammondsport at 11 a.m. In Hammondsport, adult Bible Study and Prayer at the Pulteney church on Tuesdays at 2 p.m.; adult Sunday School in Hammondsport, led by Jim Walling, at 10 a.m.

Sunday, June 1, open house and chicken barbecue at Camp Whitman from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are invited to join the fun for hiking, boating, a guided walking tour at 12:30 p.m., and tractor wagon tours. Reservations are needed only for the barbecue (tickets are $7 each). Check with Pastor Anne for more details.

Especially for Pulteney: Bible study on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Gospel of Luke. Is the spirit calling you to share a gift with the Sunday School? Please let Kathy Burns or Pastor Anne know if you are sensing a call and are willing to respond.

• Mitchellsville United Methodist Church, 8421 County Route 13, Bath, with new pastor, Rev. Ed Spencer. Services are Sundays at 8:55 a.m. There is Sunday School for children and youth during the second half of worship time, and a Coffee Hour with refreshments after the worship service. On Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m., there is a soup supper and Bible studies.

Remember that Saturday, May 31, is the pig roast at the Mitchellsville Methodist Church, serving from 4-7 p.m. Menu: roast pig, salt potatoes, cole slaw, applesauce, rolls & butter, dessert, and beverages. Prices are adults, $7.95; youth 5-12 years old, $3.95; and free for children under 5. There will also be a bake sale.
